Hello, folks, and welcome to my Diamond nostalgialocke! This is the eighth in the series. You don't have to go back and read the old ones—just know that our protagonist, Chu, has developed into her own entirely separate entity from me, took over Team Rocket, and unionized Devon Corp. Now she's heading to Sinnoh to check out the scene up there!
Honestly, this is one of the few games I don't personally have a lot of nostalgia for, because I never finished it. I found the map of Sinnoh increasingly frustrating to navigate, and by 2007 I did finally have friends at school, none of whom were playing the game, so I had nobody to share the frustration with. I never made it to the end of the plot, giving up at some point late in the game after getting lost in Mt Coronet for the millionth time, and going on to other things. I also never finished Platinum when it came out, instead playing it in full for the first time years later when I nuzlocked it, but I've never done the same for Diamond. This is one Pokemon game I've played but never, ever finished.

Let's fix that.

A key part of how I play this series is that the dupes clause extends across runs, so the Pokemon from my previous runs that I can't use are:

  • Pikachu, Pichu and Raichu
  • Rattata and Raticate
  • Mankey and Primeape
  • Nidoran M, Nidorino and Nidoking
  • Caterpie, Metapod and Butterfree
  • Spearow and Fearow
  • Abra, Kadabra and Alakazam
  • Snorlax and Munchlax
  • Bulbasaur, Ivysaur and Venusaur
  • Pidgey, Pidgeotto and Pidgeot
  • Nidoran F, Nidorina and Nidoqueen
  • Magikarp and Gyarados
  • Paras and Parasect
  • Sandshrew and Sandslash
  • Tyrogue, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee and Hitmontop
  • Totodile, Croconaw and Feraligatr
  • Bellsprout, Weepinbell and Victreebel
  • Geodude, Graveler and Golem
  • Mareep, Flaaffy and Ampharos
  • Hoppip, Skiploom and Jumpluff
  • Togepi, Togetic and Togekiss
  • Aipom and Ambipom
  • Ho-oh
  • Swinub, Piloswine and Mamoswine
  • Cyndaquil, Quilava and Typhlosion
  • Wooper and Quagsire
  • Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume and Bellossom
  • Drowzee and Hypno
  • Weedle, Kakuna and Beedrill
  • Spinarak and Ariados
  • Elekid, Electabuzz and Electivire
  • Goldeen and Seaking
  • Suicune
  • Tangela and Tangrowth
  • Meowth and Persian
  • Venonat and Venomoth
  • Murkrow and Honchkrow
  • Mudkip, Marshtomp and Swampert
  • Wurmple, Silcoon, Cascoon, Dustox and Beautifly
  • Poochyena and Mightyena
  • Zigzagoon and Linoone
  • Taillow and Swellow
  • Shroomish and Breloom
  • Gulpin and Swalot
  • Volbeat
  • Numel and Camerupt
  • Trapinch, Vibrava and Flygon
  • Tentacool and Tentacruel
  • Castform
  • Azurill, Marill and Azumarill
  • Natu and Xatu
  • Makuhita and Hariyama
  • Charmander, Charmeleon and Charizard
  • Ekans and Arbok
  • Voltorb and Electrode
  • Zubat, Golbat and Crobat
  • Gastly, Haunter and Gengar
  • Lapras
  • Koffing and Weezing
  • Psyduck and Golduck
  • Mewtwo*
  • Treecko, Grovyle and Sceptile
  • Lotad, Lombre and Ludicolo
  • Whismur, Loudred and Ludicolo
  • Aron, Lairon and Aggron
  • Illumise
  • Torkoal
  • Plusle
  • Wingull and Pelipper
  • Wailmer and Wailord
  • Rhyhorn, Rhydon and Rhyperior*
  • Swablu and Altaria*

Pokemon with a * were caught at the very end of a run and never used, so rather than being permanently duped out, are on the bench until Gen V.

With more details, for the curious:

And here's the full ruleset:

  1. Notepad clause: Catch no more than 6 Pokemon at a time. When there are 6 Pokemon in the party, no more may be captured until or unless one dies.
    1. HM exception: if none of your Pokemon can use an HM required to progress, an HM specialist may be captured and remain in the party until the need for it has passed, but should not be used in battle and should ONLY be used for essential game progression.
  2. Catch only the first Pokemon encountered in a new area.
    1. Dupes clause: If a Pokemon has been captured and used before, it may not be used again. This clause extends across runs, and also across evolutionary lines, including branched evolutions. Even though Honchkrow didn't exist before this generation, due to using a Murkrow in a precious run, it's duped out.
    2. Mulligan clause: You may have up to three attempts to find a viable Pokemon in a new area, but if you kill your find, your search ends then and there.
    3. Shiny clause: You may catch any surprise shinies regardless of any other rules, but if they are not a legal catch, they may not be used.
    4. Pokeball clause: Any wild encounters prior to buying pokeballs in Sandgem Town do not count as encounters for catching purposes. Pokeballs must be purchased at the first opportunity.
    5. Gift Pokemon may be accepted if there is space in the party.
    6. Pinwheel Forest clause: connected areas may be counted as separate areas if they feature distinctly different encounter tables.
  3. Nickname all catches after a character from a movie, book or TV show that came out the same year as the game and which was also part of your life (2007). Explain yourself. Own your cringe.
  4. If a Pokemon's HP reaches 0, they are dead. Box them at the earliest opportunity.
  5. If the whole party wipes, then that game is failed. Proceed immediately to the next game, but, weighed down by your failure and those of the past, you may not capture any party members in addition to the starter until you have regained your confidence by getting your second badge.
  6. The Exp Share may be used.
  7. Win conditions: Become The Champion (defeat the Pokemon League)

With that sorted, on we go!

Hello Munchlax, ya wee chonk! I remember being EXTREMELY excited about the touchscreen controls when they first came out, and most of the games I played integrated them pretty well instead of being gimmicky about it. I was quite disappointed at the time that I couldn't use the touchscreen to throw pokeballs, though. I know it wouldn't have actually added any functionality to the game, but it's part of why my inner child went so feral for Pokemon Go when it came out.

Chu's a true gamer, back at Wii Sports the split second the news is over. Mind how wild the world went for the Wii when it first came out, especially Wii Sports? You could get EVERYONE playing that, and it was a hella fun time. I'll give Nintendo this; they're never putting out the highest-spec consoles, but they're always innovating and, at least when Iwata-sensei was alive, the focus was always on just making games fun.

I have the most nostalgia for gen 4, even though I started FRLG and reruns of the first season of the anime. I think it's because it was the first time I was aware of new things coming out and that ot was when I was most engaged with the tcg, I first heard about Gen 5 from someone at an organized play thing from some who had learned about from the Corocoro scans, probably. I just remember that ot was before the English name for Unova had been revealed

Considered bitter by many.
Well, first off, as a screenshotting baby, the idea of having to crop each image to remove the [largely redundant] lower screen fills me with dread, so thanks for that.

There's a lot here that I've forgotten. Like, for example, Professor Rowan not living in the same town as you. That seems almost mind-blowing, along with the rival's father even existing. I remembered Rowan being the epitome of "cool old guy", though, and he is delivering on that in abundance. I have to love Oak more than the others, but Rowan may well be my second favourite.

PokéMoms must be the saddest of all NPCs. They should matter, but they kind of don't. SinnohMom does appear to have a life, though, and that's something. JohtoMom loved to shop and made Cinnabar Burgers, but this feels more wholesome. It beats obsessing over Norman, at any rate.

Diamond brought me back into the pokéfold, but I didn't enjoy it much. I had been big on RBY and GSC at the time, but lost interest in them, in favour of other hobbies and videogames, so I skipped generation III entirely. I don't remember if Diamond came out during my first year of university, or if it had already been released, but I do remember falling in with a group that played it, so I picked it up too. The game felt slow, and tedious, and to me, it was as if I had outgrown pokémon games in general. I had Phoenix Wright and Hotel Dusk, which were far more engrossing and challenging, and then there was Animal Crossing, which was cuter and more heart-warming, so, while I finished the game, I didn't really care for it.

Aa couple of years after university, I ended up replaying Diamond out of boredom. I knew nothing about Nuzlockes at the time, but I came up with the idea of limiting myself to just the first six 'mons I caught of different types. That team had a golduck, a torterra, a luxray and a staraptor on it, but I can't recall what rounded it out. I lost interest somewhere in Mt. Coronet too, but it had got me looking up information online about movesets and that led me into a bit of a pokémon revival. I picked up cheap copies of sapphire and leafgreen, and not long later found the original nuzlocke comics and the rest, as they say, is history.

I still find generation IV painfully slow. It means that I don't play Sinnoh, and while I loved GSC beyond life itself, going back to it after the GBA games is just too miserable an experience. Trying to play HGSS is still slow and it takes a lot of nostalgia to carry me through. There are some really nice changes made in this generation (and generation V takes it even further) but the games just aren't fun for me, sadly.

This is definitely a trip down memorylane for me since Gen IV were the first games I got to play properly. I'm a 90s baby so I started with Gen I in terms of the TV show, but I didn't start playing the games until the RSE and FRLG era. However, since we don't have localized versions of the games (which I am now thankful for because god were those Dutch translations from the anime cringy AF....), I didn't really understand much of it and just rushed through with my starter while pressing the A button lol.

I remember choosing Piplup as my starter back then, but Chimchar is definitely a solid choice. And basically your ONLY choice in terms of Fire types in Sinnoh unless you get a Ponyta encounter. I really don't know what Gamefreak was thinking there...I know the pool of Fire types to choose from wasn't super large back then, but they could have at least put it one or two more lines. > <

Oh, Sinnoh, my absolute beloved. It wasn't my absolute favorite growing up, but going back and replaying Platinum, listening to the music... god, do I love this region. It also granted me Drifloon, which is my all time favorite Pokemon. I even got Giratina, too! So Sinnoh's absolutely rocketed up to my favorite, riiiiight behind Johto.

Sinnoh time! Diamond was the third pokemon game I've ever played, right after Emerald and FR. While it isn't as nostalgic for me as the former, I definitely have some everlasting memories with it, such as the time when I got a Happiny up to level 40 because I had no idea how to evolve her bahah.
Also, it was pretty much the first game where I took into account type matchups; I still remember how I freaked out upon finding out that there were almost no fire types and that Electivire wasn't obtainable (seriously, who had the genius idea to lock most evolutions behind platinum or postgame?)
Anyway, since you didn't fall into the fire type trap, best of luck to you and little Chimchar, Lava-Girl's little successor (I hope)!

Marvin and River are both gonna get hit with the one-gen-only ban, because it's such a tragic waste to never get to use Altaria Q_Q
Oh, I'm glad! I wasn't sure if you were going to invoke that rule or not, but I'm glad you are! I look forward to the future possibility of Altaria and Rhydon/Rhyperior!

I honestly love how they did that sparkly word in the Sinnoh games. It's on-theme, and looks great!

3D-ish graphics!
The graphics in this gen look great in general, TBH. Another obvious leap forward in technology.

And, of course, the key to any exciting children's adventure… a REAL spooky mountain!
I love when the music turns spooky!

I also never finished Platinum when it came out, instead playing it in full for the first time years later when I nuzlocked it, but I've never done the same for Diamond. This is one Pokemon game I've played but never, ever finished.

Let's fix that.
I'm sorry that the games turned you off! It's interesting that some of the differences between Diamond and Platinum will be new even to you, though!

26sUA3z.png

I'm cropping the screencaps for now because the blank lower screen bugs me, but I probably won't bother after I get the poketch.
Probably the correct move. No point to keeping them at this point but to take up space.

I don't play Sinnoh much, but I do love and respect Professor Rowan for offering me these options.
One obscure but still valid reason why he's one of the best professors in the games!

aRfj5aW.png

The suit's also a good look, very dapper
Also true! He's like the only professor who eschews wearing the lab coat everywhere, and focuses instead on fashion! Excellent move, IMO.

9zzziC4.png

Once more, Chu has blue hair and pronouns! Not as vibrantly blue as in Crystal, admitted
Hahaha

Using the touchscreen to type rather than the D-pad is a GODSEND, and it still frustrates me when some Switch games won't let you do it >:(
Damn. That's just bad game design. Lazy, too. Just get rid of the huge and well-established quality-of-life thing for no reason!

Wait… Barry's nameable???

pZ1Gl4w.png
nT75DL6.png

I completely fucking forgot that Barry's nameable! I just thought he was locked into being Barry! Ya boi Max is BACK!
Nice! Though killing Rayquaza in one blow would be a perfectly respectable time to retire, I'm glad we get one more gen with him!

iXZ2zNX.png

Chu used Minimize!
Haha

Chu's a true gamer, back at Wii Sports the split second the news is over. Mind how wild the world went for the Wii when it first came out, especially Wii Sports? You could get EVERYONE playing that, and it was a hella fun time. I'll give Nintendo this; they're never putting out the highest-spec consoles, but they're always innovating and, at least when Iwata-sensei was alive, the focus was always on just making games fun.
Oh yeah. I remember when it came out and my best friend--the one with the Game Cube--really wanted one for Christmas, and how hard it was to even find one because of the popularity.

Also, as I mentioned right at the beginning of this series, the Wii was my mom's only exception to our household's ban on video games when I was a kid, because the likes of Wii Sports and Wii Fit encouraged exercise rather than couch potato-ry. We got it after the initial rush but still in its heyday and all played the Wii for a while, as a family and individually.

03KbQDr.png

Oh god, he didn't see Scott, did he??
Fucking hell, if there's some rogue necromancer who bothered to raise that guy from the dead, I swear to god--

It's a nice wee touch that your mum's watching Contests, I think. Your Gen IV mum gets more characterization than most of the other mums simply via having a hobby that exists outside of healing her child's Pokemon, which now makes me sad for all the other mums
And she gets a name, too! It's sad how low the bar is, huh? The mother in X and Y also has a name (Grace) and a bit of characterization (ex-Rhyhorn racer), but unfortunately the games she's in were so forgettable that she's rendered forgettable too. :(

Th24Bya.png

I really love that all the houses in Twinleaf look like log cabins. It looks so cozy 💚
Ooh, nice catch! Never noticed that before! It's cute!

InAfQBe.png

Let me introduce you to Wee Sue, she's just retired from battling and she's adorable
Aww, I like the idea of Sue spending her well-earned retirement as this little girl's companion. That's sweet. Plus, that little girl and her family are now some of the most well-defended people in Sinnoh, which, given everything that's about to go down, isn't a bad thing.

5ONyqkR.png

Oh yeah, you can meet the rival's dad in the postgame, right? Honestly ma'am I think he's just a teenage boy and gay
Haha

Folk around here really are used to me having to hunt that boy down, huh
It's good training for the endless fetch-quests that make up the life of a Pokémon protagonist. Not that Chu needs it, at this point...

xpsNfiR.png
qkNXca0.png
GRwebbF.png

Oh, huh… I've only replayed Platinum before, so I was expecting someone considerably more unhinged than these two
Oh yeah, that's right! I forgot about that too. Diamond and Pearl don't go quite as hardcore on introducing the plot right away.

Many rare kinds indeed! Rarest of all being fire-types, of which there are fucking none
F

MuT0HKv.png

All three of these are excellent little dudes and I love them all dearly, but Chimchar is still my favourite, and as mentioned, there is fucking nothing else for fire-types in Diamond unless I get very lucky in encountering Ponyta at a time when I have an empty team slot.
Yep, here we go. The only real question was whether you'd take the Chimchar now or save 'em til Platinum.

I mean, leaving the briefcase was kinda silly, but if he's the kind of boss who's gonna rip you a new one because we stole your Pokemon… do you want me to put you in touch with the union rep for Unpaid Child Research Assistants? There's… kind of a lot of us
Oh no! I hope this situation isn't what it looks like and Rowan isn't also going to turn out to be secretly evil! He's too cool! It'd be really sad. :(

Also, the existence of the Unpaid Child Research Assistants union. Never thought about that before, but very much needed. Unfortunately.

They're alive! I swear! It's too early in the run for me to have gotten anyone killed!
Haha, ouch.

I don't have a lot of nostalgia for Sinnoh, but how about you? Tell me all about it!
Kind of, but it's strange. As I said a long time ago, Gen IV was the only Pokémon gen that I fully skipped when it came out, losing interest in Pokémon in Gen III and regaining interest in Gen V. I have zero childhood memories of it at all, and the closest memories I can call "nostalgia" for it is barely a decade old. Platinum was the third Pokémon game I played, after SoulSilver and Black, but I got them all in pretty close succession, and it took me a while to learn how to skip the opening cinematic, so I watched the openings to those games a lot. The Platinum one is a little different than the Diamond/Pearl one--most notably that Platinum has a shadowy, red-eyed Giratina rising out of a hole in the ground while the spooky music plays--but they're still close enough that I got a bit of nostalgia just from looking at the screencaps you posted. The intro cinematic really is cool, and the game theme is a banger. It's a little weird, admittedly, that this is the aspect of the game for which I am nostalgic, but there you go.

Between long periods of dormant slumber, this writer rises again for periods of activity that leave piles of dead fictional Pokemon in their wake
@Time Master Eon Oh yeah, I remember there was actually quite a gap between Gen V being announced and the region getting a different name, wasn't there? It was Isshai, wasn't it?

@Green Tea oh I don't HAVE to crop the lower screen, I just decided to because it was bugging me, and by the time I realized that cropping the screencaps is painfully tedious it was too late, I Am Doing It This Way Now. Don't make my mistakes, just put up with the annoying blank space :v
Hell of a journey you went on with Gen IV! It does seem to be one of the more polarizing generations… either it's major nostalgia for someone and they love it, or they didn't like it and find it tedious to replay… I'm in the latter group, I have to admit, but it's more fun to riff on the screencaps and share it with y'all :P

@Valerie Welkom! All the Sinnoh starters are adorable, but there's some major type imbalances in Sinnoh, so Chimchar really feels like the only choice… plus, I like fire >:D

@Nebbles Sinnoh did give us some banger Pokemon… I really like the life they breathed into a few neglected lines by giving them cool new evolutions, like Togekiss and Honchkrow!

@bhelryss I entirely forgot that Barry can be anything but Barry… well, Barry is gone, Max is here now!
Ever since finding out that Infernape is based on Sun Wukong I can't not think of the "hyper murder monkey" comic when picking Chimchar. Love this pyro baby

@reshishigas dsfds I had the SAME PROBLEM with Happiny! I thought she was a happiness evo just like basically every other baby! But nope! What the fuck is an Oval Stone! Aaaahhhhhh
Here's hoping the wee man carries forth Lava-Girl's power!

@songwithnosoul I have decided to believe that Barry wasn't nameable, but after Max became a sky god the game was too intimidated to stop him, so here he is
We got the whole family in on Wii Sports too, even aunts and uncles who barely know what video games are… it's amazing that Nintendo got such incredible success out of basically the next generation of Pong, but it just goes to show how far you can go just by making games fun!
Having played most of the run at this point… good GOD does Sinnoh run on fetch-quests, having to go find Barry really is the true tutorial
I feel like Gen IV really did hit this unfortunate spot where, like, after Pokemania surged in Gen I and peaked in Gen II, it had started to ebb a bit in Gen III, and all the kids who made the previous gens so successful had hit "Pokemon is for little kids" age, so a lot of us either skipped it or barely played it. I was the same way, really regaining interest in Gen V, which I have to admit I'm really looking forward to replaying for this series!

Hello and welcome back to my Diamond nostalgialocke! Last time, we stole a monkey. Fresh into Sinnoh and already committing crimes! We also reunited with our main man Max…

…Y'know, this is a moment to remind myself that these games are aimed at kids, and it's actually a good thing to impress on kids to let an adult know where they're going. I think it's good for kids to let them free roam a bit, and that's safer than it's ever been now that most kids have phones and you can keep in touch with them easily, but a responsible adult still should keep aware of where they are and what they're up to.

This Skarmory/Charizard fusion is very rare and tends to be quiet and shy until befriended. Also writes and is a huge fan of Smash Bros.
Sinnoh hype! It's debatably my favorite generation, and has a lot of my all-time favorite Pokémon, so I'm excited. I'm glad you went with Diamond over Pearl-I always liked it/Dialga more, which carried over into Legends.
Rowan is one of the best professors just because he's unintentionally savage, especially for being 60. That scene in Platinum where he just shreds Team Galactic sends me every time I play it.
And the starters are all great too. Gen 4 is the first gen where I actually like all three evenly, although I had a feeling you'd take Chimchar because FIRE (which DP Sinnoh sorely lacks...wtf were they thinking practically leaving it out completely but then deciding one of the Elite 4 should be a "Fire"-type trainer (when 3/5ths of his team is not Fire))?

I love Rowan, honestly. The speech he gives about being 60 and still being excited to take a step with his Pokemon hits every time I read it. He would be my favorite Professor, were I not a useless lesbian in love with Juniper. Alas! I also think the Sinnoh mom is my favorite too, there's something so good about every character in Sinnoh.

I said it last time, Rowan is my second-favourite, and with good cause. He's a great professor and maybe I'm a sucker for stereotypes, but the white hair and moustache give him serious gravitas. He looks like a legitimate authority on pokémon, and, despite Galar not turning up for a few generations, Rowan seemed English and that endeared me towards him.

Also, this. And the second part.

I know the protagonists will always be kids because, again, the games are aimed at kids, but one of these days I wanna read a run where the protagonist is, like, a middle-aged mum whose kids have left to go to uni and she decides to combat Empty Nest Syndrome by going out on a Pokemon journey
The essential problem with the pokemon fanbase is that all the adults have excellent ideas that cannot be made into games because of Pokemon's brand.
What do you think of Rowan compared to the other professors? He really is one of my favourites, he's just such a strong personality :D
I haven't played the Sinnoh games much, but the Galactic Grunt speech slaps. However, my favorite is Elm (despite my favorite region being Hoenn, Johto will always have a special place in my heart.)

@songwithnosoul I have decided to believe that Barry wasn't nameable, but after Max became a sky god the game was too intimidated to stop him, so here he is

This is true! Guess I must have White Smoke, though, 'cause he can't scare me :)
Hasn't even named her first 'mon yet, and already she's getting in with the one-liners! Excellent!

It was at this point that I remembered that the menu was accessed with the X button, not the Start button, which was more intuitive on the DS but fucking with my muscle memory on a laptop keyboard
Ah, that's a shame.

Aye, I noticed, thanks
The game really wanted kids to be sure that the incident at the lake wasn't a one-time thing, I guess.

Goddamn, this bag has a lot of pockets! Least it means I won't have to scroll past loads of X items I've picked up to find my potions :v
I really wish they'd kept this setup in later gens. I miss having a dedicated Pokéball pocket instead of having to scroll through Revives and Potions and 1000 different kinds of held items to see if I have enough Dive Balls to catch shiny Suicune. Or what have you.

Other professors: use Pokemon to bribe children into doing their field research. The chad professor Rowan: lets the child who robbed him keep the Pokemon when he sees it's being loved and is happy.
…Actually, come to think of that, Elm did that too, once Silver eventually came clean, didn't he? Always nice to see.
See, Rowan is cool! Maybe he even actually pays Lucas in money rather than experience!

…Spoke too soon, I'm being press-ganged into doing an adult man's field research for him again, and I can't protest lest he decide that he's not actually chill about me robbing him after all. Very devious, old man.

She shall hide under my hat and turn me into a great French chef. Okay, Colette is a human character in Ratatouille, not a rat, but I don't remember there being any named female rats. Although I have seen the suggestion going around that, due to his size, Remy is a trans male rat, and his family are totally fine with his gender, just appalled by his career goals, which is adorable
That's a great reference either way! Very appropriate! And I've heard that theory about Remy too, and I also really dig it!

Are you really blocking me until I go talk to my mum??
…Y'know, this is a moment to remind myself that these games are aimed at kids, and it's actually a good thing to impress on kids to let an adult know where they're going. I think it's good for kids to let them free roam a bit, and that's safer than it's ever been now that most kids have phones and you can keep in touch with them easily, but a responsible adult still should keep aware of where they are and what they're up to.
Yeah, that's a good point! Always important to keep the target audience in mind when judging these things... and then feel free to complain if they're condescending to kids as well :V

I know the protagonists will always be kids because, again, the games are aimed at kids, but one of these days I wanna read a run where the protagonist is, like, a middle-aged mum whose kids have left to go to uni and she decides to combat Empty Nest Syndrome by going out on a Pokemon journey
I'd also be interested in that too! Nuzlockes generally aren't aimed at kids, and can have such a wide range of stories and protagonists! That sounds like a fresh premise!

eHIBqsk.png

And I can't even steal the contents, dammit!
Haha

Oh, it's actually nice, reassuring you that you're not in trouble! At the age I was playing these games, I lived in constant terror that I was Doing Things Wrong and Getting In Trouble... ahhh, undiagnosed autism.
Oh, I feel that. I feel that so hard.

What do you think of Rowan compared to the other professors? He really is one of my favourites, he's just such a strong personality :D
I think he's cool! I feel like I'm stanning him a little harder than intended in this run, mostly because I'm hoping one adult authority figure in this series won't turn out to be awful, but he also has a strong, defined character and is a bit of a badass, and I respect that about him!

Between long periods of dormant slumber, this writer rises again for periods of activity that leave piles of dead fictional Pokemon in their wake
@Skarmizard I have to admit, I primarily went for Diamond as a teenager bc it's blue and I'm a simple creature :P
Oh, I dunno, I think Rowan is intentionally very savage XD

@Time Master Eon d'awwww, Rowan is pretty grandfatherly! And better at it than Oak, too XD

@Nebbles As a useless lesbian I am getting Scarlet for the new professor and, for the sake of the spoiler embargo, that's all I'll say on that XD Sinnoh mum is so good, but all of the mums are <3

@Green Tea Rowan's one of those old men from Avatar: The Last Airbender who takes off his cloak and turns out to be RIDICULOUSLY BUFF
Max isn't a bad kid, just hyperactive and gay!

@Electro Pokemon are in favour of crimes, which is good for Chu, since she commits so many!
The Pokemon Company is already forcing too many games out too fast, and the quality of them visibly suffers, so I'm not gonna ask them to try putting out a more diverse portfolio of Pokemon games aimed at different age ranges, buuuut… well, never mind, that's what fanfic is for!

@songwithnosoul one thing I remember fondly of this game is getting to shine the badges and watch them sparkle… If I had more money I'd be all over the enamel pin sets of game badges you can get on etsy XD
I can't even dislike Rowan for any of his devious little tricks, I just respect 'em, he's too good not to respect XD
It's important to remember to treat kids as kids… but also that kids hate being treated as kids, and from the age of six or so on, they continually perceive themselves as very grown up and prefer to be treated as such XD
So far, Rowan isn't showing up as either an eldritch horror or a terrible father/grandfather, just a pretty badass old man who's soft-ish on kids! I can get behind that!

Hello and welcome back to my Diamond nostalgialocke! Last time, we got our first catch and then got blocked by Lucas until we went to talk to our mum. This time…

Not that I'll be back even after I've got badges since the Gen IV GTS is long gone, but still, what a great idea. Of course, folk immediately cheesed it—folk demanding a level 100 Mewtwo for their Growlithe was a thing from day one—but there were also still plenty of people offering a version exclusive for its opposite number, newly-hatched starters for other newly-hatched starters, Machoke4Machoke and so on. In this period where pokemania was at a low dip, and I was the only person I knew in real life who was playing Diamond or Pearl, this was an incredibly valuable resource.

Oh god, he's hyperactive and either has an eidetic memory or a hyperfixation. As a teacher I love him but also know that engaging him for education would be a full-time job as a solo student, let alone as part of a larger class. Honestly, a good shout for kids that are bored because they pick things up easily is to deputize them to help out other kids. Kids love a lil taste of authority, and it can help inspire them to dig a little deeper into a subject that they might otherwise be uninterested in beyond what it takes to finish the worksheet, because they want to have more knowledge to show off/teach to the other kids. Just make sure not to let them get too despotic with it.

Interesting wee tidbit about Jubilife, and obviously wasn't taking into account Legends: Arceus at the time, but it gives me some thoughts about linking Jubilife Village and Jubilife City; carving land out of a mountain just to build a city is a hell of an undertaking, and not something you usually do if you've got anywhere else to build… but maybe it wasn't so much space as stubbornness. Archaeological evidence suggests that the city of Troy was built and rebuilt a dozen times on its own ruins; Pompeii's been rebuilt a couple of times, and today there's a Pompei; when fires and floods and earthquakes strike cities like London and Tokyo and San Fransisco and Amsterdam, folk tend to rebuild where they are. So what if something happened to Jubilife Village—an earthquake, or a landslide, or a volcanic eruption, something that destroyed the old village. The survivors, as humans do, went "no fuck you, this is our home", and since there was, by this time, another town nearby that specialized in mining, they could get the help they needed to carve out land over the ruins of their old village and build a new city. History is fun!

Let's see if we can finish filling out this team next time! Have you ever gotten a good trade on the GTS? On the opposite end of the spectrum, I have never forgiven the person who traded me a Haunter for a Haunter, when I'd been looking ages for a Gengar... and their Haunter was holding an Everstone.

Considered bitter by many.
Your baby squad's taking shape! You've even got some nice type-coverage going on, too, so it's really coming together nicely, and I know that a little luck in the upcoming areas will give you even more options. They're all so darling!

Roselia's this weird, forgotten grass-type from RSE. I think it's on one route, it's got subpar stats and it doesn't really count for much. DPPt then came along to give it a pre-evolution and evolution and now it's a staple for good Sinnoh teams. For all the pokémon that don't get much love... look at Roselia. That's what can happen.

My take on that kid with his dad's magikarp is that he's probably a real pain, and a bit of a danger to himself. His dad gave him something that couldn't possibly hurt him, because even a bidoof might be too big a risk.

I pronounce pokétch as "poke-etch", so I'm entirely behind your etch-a-sketch interpretation of it. Sure, the drawing app isn't quite like it, but you can't have everything go right. The calculator seemed odd to me, I can't recall many occasions where a pokémon game requires me to do any sort of mathematics, so it's almost like it's meant for real-world applications instead. The counter, at least, could be used for counting steps or something if you were trying to hatch an egg?

I barely used the GTS. Even in the early days, it was full of ridiculous requests. The everstone haunter is bad, although I'm sure that happens in one of the games where you can trade for something with an everstone, but I'm fuzzy on the details of it.

GTS trading was a wonder for me in X/Y when I was completing the Pokedex; people were awfully generous in trading around all the Eevolutions! I was able to really just get my Pokedex done so so quickly that way. For all the "give me level 9 Mew" people on there, you definitely had a lot of good people too.
