Alrighty folks, hello and welcome to my Emerald nostalgialocke! This is the seventh run in the series, but you don’t have to have read the previous runs to enjoy this one. The main thing you need to know is that the dupes clause extends across runs, so every Pokemon I’ve caught in a previous run will be duped out for this one. The current banlist is as follows:

1. Notepad clause: Catch no more than 6 Pokemon at a time. When there are 6 Pokemon in the party, no more may be captured until or unless one dies.
   1. HM exception: if none of your Pokemon can use an HM required to progress, an HM specialist may be captured and remain in the party until the need for it has passed, but must nto be used in battle and should be boxed as soon as possible.
2. Catch only the first Pokemon encountered in a new area.
   1. Dupes clause: If a Pokemon has been captured and used before, it may not be used again. This clause extends across runs, and also across evolutionary lines, including branched evolutions.
   2. Mulligan clause: You may have up to three attempts to find a viable Pokemon in a new area, but if you kill your find, your search ends then and there.
   3. Shiny clause: You may catch any surprise shinies regardless of any other rules, but if they are not a legal catch, they may not be used.
   4. Pokeball clause: Any wild encounters prior to first receiving pokeballs don't count.
   5. Gift Pokemon may be accepted if they are the first “encounter” in an area and if there is space in the party.
   6. Pinwheel Forest clause: connected areas may be counted as separate areas if they feature different encounters and catch rates. The different Safari Zone, er, zones count as separate areas, but underwater kelp patches across different routes do not.
3. Nickname all catches after a character from a movie, book or TV show that came out the same year as the game and which was also part of your life (2005). Explain yourself. Own your cringe.
4. If a Pokemon’s HP reaches 0, they are dead. Box them at the earliest opportunity.
5. If the whole party wipes, then that game is failed. Proceed immediately to the next game, but, weighed down by your failure and those of the past, you may not capture any party members in addition to the starter until you have regained your confidence by getting your second badge.
6. The Exp Share may be used.
7. Win conditions: Imagine How Is Touch The Sky (defeat or capture Rayquaza)

Oh, and during the FireRed run—see the Arbok, Crobat and Weezing in the lineup for that game? Yeah, they foretold Chu’s destiny to rule Team Rocket, and it was so. Now that that’s done, Boss Chu is heading back to Hoenn to follow up news that some familiar numpties are back in action.

2005 heralded the glorious, triumphant, wonderful return of Doctor Who to our TVs. I wasn’t that excited when I heard about it; my brother and I were both “that weird old show with the tinfoil aliens? Eh 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️” but our dad was VERY excited, so he got us all to sit down with him and watch the first episode. While the BBC is never leading the race in terms of special effects, it was obviously leagues better than the 70s reruns we’d occasionally seen, and I still remember Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor very fondly as sparkling with wit and anger. I’m glad his fight to use his own accent was successful, and I’m glad him and Billie Piper were so thoroughly excellent all through that first returning series. I’m just sad we never got to see Nine hang out with Donna Noble, Objectively The Best Companion.
Anyway, I fondly remember winding up hiding behind a cushion because the mannequins were freaking me out so much. Dad laughed his head off at that, but oh how the turntables when the episode came along that re-introduced Daleks and showed them flying for the first time, because he genuinely, I shit you not, vaulted the couch while screaming “THAT’S CHEATIN! THAT’S NO ALLOWED!”
(All my love to Ncuti Gatwa, I hope he gets to keep his Dunfermline accent as the Doctor, and god I hope RTD coming back can bring us back up from the aggressively shit Moffat era and the tragically "eh" Chibnall era)

Emerald sprites move again, but the actions are much shorter and sharper than in Crystal, so it’s harder to get a cap of them. I feel like the games do tend to have clear "easy/medium/hard" start 'mons, with fire-types often being the hard-mode starter because of all those fuckin Rock-type first gyms. Except for in Johto, where the hard mode is clearly Chikorita... It's nice that they had solid advice for once instead of being snarky!

Which I only ever saw attached to just, like, pictures of Mudkip, but I think it originated from 4chan, so I'm sure there's something fucking disgusting behind it. What's your favourite Pokemon meme? I also had a moment of “oh it used Counter, good, that only reflects Physical moves” and this is how I discovered that for SOME FUCKING REASON, Ghost-type was PHYSICAL in Gen I-III. WHAT. GHOSTS ARE THE OPPOSITE OF PHYSICAL THAT’S LITERALLY THE WHOLE POINT

Yeah, it really doesn't make sense. The only explanation I've seen offered (and this is just a theory, AFAIK,) is that it was because of Lick, since it's the only ghost-type move in Gen I that does damage in an ordinary way. (As opposed to Confuse Ray and Night Shade, the other two ghost-type moves in that gen.) So the whole type ended up on the physical side of the physical/special split because of an outlier. Classic Gen I.

Oh well. It's not like you could've run away. You had to take a chance and do something, and it should've worked. Fuck Wobbuffet.

I very much did not intend for these runs to turn into any sort of fiction storytelling, but what can I say, I can’t resist XD Catching Mewtwo specifically to never use them for a fight feels good on a compassionate level, but also in a “laughing in Giovanni’s face” level. Ha-ha, I did what you never could and caught Mewtwo, and I’m not even gonna use them in a SINGLE fight! I’m gonna go show them Ghibli movies! And there’s NOTHING you can do about it!

“Hellboy” was actually the name I was gonna go with for my starter, until I got a wee girl instead of a male Charmander! So there’s a kind of symmetry in using the name for the last ‘mon of the run instead of the first :D

I have no idea what the Vaporeon copypasta even is, and I don't think I want to Google it. Personally, this image makes me chuckle. There's another variation on that meme that goes something like "CLIMB THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN, PUNCH THE FACE OF GOD" that's just branded into my brain, even if I don't seem to have the image saved.

Scotland ain’t humid, just fuckin damp… Tokyo got HELLA humid in the summer, I felt like I was turning into a sticky swamp creature DX There’s a reason when my brother came to visit I gave him a battery fan, a hand fan, and a sweat towel. You know what’s the worst, though? Japanese people don’t smell when they sweat! There’s somethin going on with how they sweat because of how hot the summers are, and I am ENVIOUS! I had 7-year-old boys coming in from baseball for English class, covered in sweat as is natural for 7-year-old boys in the summer, but they didn’t smell at ALL, which is utterly bizarre for 7-year-old boys! It was wild!

i am excited to see how far you can bring gecko friend. my first time playing gen 3 i picked treecko and fell so hard in love with it that i just don't enjoy using the other two starters. my baby Leafy eventually got so strong i could solo the entire league with him <3

First off, yes, Gary F'n Oak is a superb Pokémeme, and that image especially is a testament to his awesomeness.

Secondly, ho-oh is clearly the pride 'mon of choice, but it's not as if charmander's a reliable source of information, so let's not take anything that the _flaming_ lizard says to heart. This is our month and we're all going to enjoy it, damn it.

Thirdly, there was an update, too!

While I don't much care for the "deez nuts" meme, when you said it to him, I found myself singing it to the tune of "bad boys". I'm not sure why that happened, but it did.

Roxanne's gym is especially disappointing. One nosepass and a quarry of geodude. Sure, she might not be carrying the fossils, and Brock hogged the onix, but what about larvitar, or even solrock or a lunatone? Maybe give some nosepass to the trainers and one of the psychics to Roxanne and try to convince players that this region/game is going to be a little different to usual, instead of the same old easy-to-kill rock-types?

As for NOM calling it the "plant" type, maybe they're just thinking back to generation one and its seldom-seen "bird" type? Let's be a little more descriptive with our type names, why not?
