General Video Games Stuff You Just Figured Out

This was one of my favorite threads on the old forum, so I'm bringing it back! What strange/odd/interesting thing about a Pokémon/game/mechanic did you just discover?
Note: please follow the rules regarding Gen 8 spoilers.

Anyway, so I just found out there's a bug in Gale of Darkness where if you faint Miror B.'s Shadow Voltorb (in his first battle), you'll never have another chance to catch it, which also means you can't catch the Dragonite in the postgame.

After playing Diamond and Pearl since Day 1 in the US and Platinum a week or two after the Japanese release, I recently learned that the tiles you step on in Volkner's gym to spin the gears show which way they'll spin. All this time I thought the white was meant to simulate a reflection and I just memorized which ones did which.

I didn't know that there was actually a trick to where the second switches were in Surge's gym, so I randomly dug through the trash cans in every playthrough of Kanto and Johto. Then the other day I read that there is a pattern for it in Gens 1 and 2, and I was like... how did I miss that?!

N's team changes every time you fight him and his team is always pokemon from the area youre in, i guess implying that he releases them as he leaves. pretty cool detail to add it

Ever since the rivals in the games have all been your friends and the like, it made me realize that Pokemon are games about crushing the hopes and dreams of your friends.

Bring back the jerk rivals so I can feel less guilty about curbstomping them all the time!

After being in the mid to late teens for literally the entirety of its existence, Mime Jr. now learns Mimic at Lv.32. I just assumed it wouldn't be, so now I'm stuck lugging a baby Pokemon for half of the game in my Shield Playthrough. Good thing I planned on using a team in rotation.

Just sideline Mine Jr. for now rather than trying to battle with it if its giving you problems. You can get Medium and Large XP candies from Max Raids later that'll let you get it caught up very fast after a few raid battles. Might not be as viable an option though if you're Nuzlocking.

Well I found out the hard way that bide hits ghost in Gen 4 (I don't know where else it happens) that's the one i learned in a nuzlocke

Couple of SwSh things:


After you defeat Leon, when you look at the title screen it will show the team you used. Don't know if this counts on repeat wins in the Champion's Cup, but it's a nice touch.

Also, Applin and its evolutions are the first Pokemon to be in the Erratic Experience Group (Requiring 600k for Lv.100 but with wildly varying amounts per level) since Gen IV. Very minor, but I thought it was interesting. Certainly explains why my Flapple grew so fast in my first playthrough.

If Spite drains the last PP from a move before you can use it, it will fail. Somehow I didn't expect that.

The Sinnoh fossils evolve way earlier than all the others-they both evolve at 30, while the next earliest are the Unova fossils at 37, then Kalos at 39, and finally Kanto and Hoenn tie at 40.
I've never used either Sinnoh fossil, so I had no idea they evolved so quickly...

I found that out a few months ago, still I was surprised I didn't notice it for all the years I played pokemon - The gender of pokemon owned by trainers tend to be the same as the gender of their owners.

Another thing I discovered some time ago but felt would be useful info for others- Koga’s gym’s ‘invisible walls’ are actually slightly different tiles than the normal tiles you walk on. Not a huge different, but it makes navigation much easier

Wailord is a pure water type. For whatever reason, all these years I thought it was water/flying. It's not like I've ever used one, so...

Also, Revenge does not work the same as Retaliate. Had to learn that the hard way against one of the trainers at the Veilstone City Gym. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten, Barb the Psyduck.

When I was playing Pokemon Emerald the first time some years ago, I found out and realized that when you encounter a Team Magma and a Team Aqua Grunt, their individual encounter theme before battling one of them is not the same! (The melodies are similar but in different keys!)

As of Sword and Shield, Flash Fire, Harvest, Storm Drain, and Lightning Rod make Fire, Grass, Water, and Electric Pokemon respectively more common in the wild. I was wondering why I was encountering so many Electric types with my Electrike.

Static has that effect as well! It’s why I ended up benching an Electabuzz I was using in a white 2 Nuzlocke. Audino grinding is much more difficult if the only Pokémon appearing is EMOLGA
