Tailsimp: The Impish Pokemon. Despite being quiet and reserved, this pokemon is usually very happy to talk and is always excited to help out!
When you're from the North, most Pokémon in the South are ones you have never seen before, so the thought had never occurred to Sapphire that any of her teammates are all that special. But Vega didn't seem too bothered by the attention, so Sapphire didn't see the need to think on it too much either. After all, someone's actual capabilities speak much more about them than their species ever could.

Sapphire remembers hearing that one of the great nobles in the south is frighteningly powerful and intelligent Amphros.

'Most certainly can't rely on species as an indicator of anything.' Sapphire thought, her nose scrunched.

After a much shorter walk than anticipated, the group wandered into what was most certainly the place they needed to be, going by the amount of pokemon present. Sapphire watched quietly for a moment, getting a lay of the land and the energy of the room. Her eyes wandered to the two darumaka fighting at the map about where there mission was, and for a second let herself wonder how far her 'team' would be allowed to wander from this town. Could they- could she- get out and about at all, or were they all presumably shackled to the town until they paid their dues?

Paid Calamus's dues, a part of her mind spat.

With a deep breath she shook the thought. The guildmaster made it clear their was no escaping this, so dwelling on how repugnantly stupid and unfair it was- no matter how true it was- did her no good.

Sapphire turned to look at the cubbies that pokemon were retrieving and placing items back into. Huh, were they personal or items for the guild to share? She searched her memories and found nothing to compare it to with what she had seen in the northern guild. In fact- she glanced at the large briefing room- was there even a room like this there? Though even if there were, it's not like she would have any reason to know. She was something akin to an escort to team Tundra- going with them to help guide and inform them of matters specific to the challenges of the north; what need did she have to know of a meeting room?

Though... this might mean that the bit of bravado she felt having experience with guilds and rescue teams wasn't nearly as earned as she originally felt. For all she did know about rescue team work, there must be 2 or 3 times as much she didn't know- and Articuno knows this incompetent- wait that doesn't seem fair to Vega- this mostly incompetent group didn't have much to offer in how this all worked. It would be on their leader to try to learn more but (Sapphire glanced at Luella, full of apprehension as she glanced around the room for teammates that weren't there) somehow she doubted how well leaving the task to her would work out.

With a sigh, Sapphire accepted that she would have to take responsibility for this.

"Erm, but I sure do hope Orion and Calamus find their way here soon. Maybe I should wait here, at least until the meeting starts, just in case, wouldn't want them to think we were the ones that haven't arrived yet, you know?"

Sapphire took a second to think. It was a stupid- incredibly stupid- for their leader to allow Calamus to wander without supervision (no, the other child did not count) after everything they did yesterday. Honestly letting Calamus do... anything without supervision seemed ridiculous at this point. Under the strict supervision of the hospital they were fine, but when allowed to wander destruction and disaster quickly followed. But what's done is done, and Sapphire was still a touch too tired to expend any energy chastising Luella for something the grass elemental already seemed to be (rightfully) regretting.

"I would volunteer to go retrieve them," Sapphire offered honestly, " but we don't know how many routes there might be from here to the mess hall, so we might just end up missing each other along the way. Unfortunately, waiting here is probably best for now." Sapphire paused as Vega began speaking with a breloom. It seemed between this and the night before that this one liked to wander. ".... Maybe for the future we should invest in a rollcall orb for the team, so we can find each other as needed."

"Do you know where the morning meeting will be held?" the Elgeym asked.

Absolutely! Just follow me, I’ll show you the way!” Rose replied. She then headed out of the mess hall with the Elgyem close behind. She couldn’t help but wonder what these guys’ teammates were like. With a member like that Mareep, they had to either be very patient, or very exasperated. Guess she would know soon enough.

Once a mouse, now evolved into a rabbit. She is feeling comfortable and clean in her new skin!
Calamus dragged his feet as he trudged after Alta into the briefing room. With his belly full and emotions somewhat under control, he was feeling at least well enough to face his team again, but... that was just it. How long was he going to be okay facing his team? Because Alta kept insisting along the way that he try to make friends with at least some of them, the ones he liked, but that was just it: At this point, he'd come to hate all of them. Luella was a useless peasant of a leader who spent more time tip-tapping her toes and feigning false confidence than being a proper leader. Sapphire was a complete b- brat with a nasty attitude and enough fake grins to fill a damned shipyard with, false in demeanor, false false FALSE, and so stuck up her own rear she could probably see out her mouth. (Thank Zapdos his parents hadn't heard him think that.) And Orion was a confusing bastard who would offer companionship and yank it away at a moment's notice, for no reason at all, and ignore every attempt Calamus made to communicate with them. Vega was-

Hm.

A peasant? Yeah.

But otherwise...?

Hm.

Anyways. Calamus had only now just realized the quiet desperation he'd had within to connect with someone, anyone, on this team. Hell, there'd been a (in hindsight) deplorable moment where he'd almost been ready to befriend SAPPHIRE. SAPPHIRE. But she was a b- rat and Orion was a brat and Luella was a brat! And Vega was... Screw all of them!

His teammates were distressing to the extreme, and though Calamus had explained to Alta that every interaction with his team led to breakdowns so terrifying they brought Calamus to fear that his own brain might murder him outright, Alta claimed she could do nothing about team placements. She was apparently only a silver-rank rescue team. (Near-gold rank in her words, but in Calamus's words, that was just silver. The rankings all meant blather-all anyways.) Calamus had a heavy suspicion that this was not her only role at the guild. She'd come to console him deliberately. There was always more to gain from doing such things than simply helping a poor distressed mareep who desperately needed help.

But... Well... He had needed help. And Alta had delivered that help. And it wasn't like useless Luella and b-ratty Sapphire or Orion's completely refusal to ever reach out to other people. She'd actually... helped.

He felt rotten that it was scary to him. In the past weeks, Calamus's emotions had been a storm out of control, untamable, unrestrainable, an absolutely feral beast that Calamus lived in complete terror of. One moment he could be fine, the next he could be ready to die just to escape the complete turmoil reigning in his head. His freakouts had never been so bad before. His mood had never changed on the poke before, not so drastically. He'd always been an... easily frazzled person, but this feeling was like being hunted for sport. Nothing could bring those moods down. Nothing could calm the storm until it wore itself out and left him feeling like he'd been hit by a runaway carriage.

Until Alta. SHE had calmed the storm.

Not completely. He still was tired and could feel the snot dripping in his nose from crying, and the thought of seeing Orion again made him want to try jumping through a window again, but... He could walk. He could talk. He wasn't crying. He was fed and arriving at the briefing room to meet with his team. He was.. put together again.

He stared hard at Alta once again. What the hell sort of power did this random staravia have to soothe the untamable storm? He almost had reason to suspect she was a psychic-type in disguise, who'd influenced his mind without his realizing, but he didn't feel psychic'd. And he KNEW what feeling psychic'd was like. Even before the monster Uragiri had entered his life, his father had trained him in recognizing the influence of psychic-types in his head, and Calamus had had to put that into practice at several dinners, where potential psychic-type aristocratic allies had tried to sneak thoughts into his head of befriending their munna daughter, most likely for stronger alliances down the line. It was illegal to do so. Calamus had reported the incident to his father with a big smile and a skip in his step. His father then put the brats in jail. One of his finest victories, for sure.

Alta had not influenced him in such a way. They'd just done as she'd asked, breathed together. And somehow it had helped. He tried his best to remember the numbers. Four, four... eight? Six? There wasn't much of a difference there, anyways. Maybe it was some sort of spell. Whether it would work outside Alta's presence or not, he couldn't be sure, but... He would remember it.

Alta looked down at him as they came in. "Where's your team, sweetheart?"

Calamus looked around and felt his stomach roll as his eyes fell on them: Luella, Sapphire, and Vega. The useless, the b-rat, and the... cleffa. He pointed with his nose and grumbled. "There."

"Can I trust you to get over to them okay?"

"I'm not a child," Calamus muttered. He took a few steps forward, but when he found himself hesitating, tugged by anxiety, he glanced back at her. "Uh... um..."

"It was no trouble, dearie," Alta said with a gentle smile. "I'll see you soon, okay?"

He hadn't been meaning to say thank you (though in hindsight, he regretted not thinking to). But the idea of seeing her soon again.. It was comforting. He gave a little smile. "Y-yeah, um... s-see you soon." He turned and galloped away to his team.

Calamus bleated loudly as he approached them, his princely voice assumed. "Orion will be here soon with your refreshments. I couldn't be bothered to deliver favors to lowlifes such as you lot. I've already eaten." He spoke as directly as possible to Luella and Sapphire without actually looking at them. They were a sore sight for silver eyes. But he glanced at them out of curiosity and, in response to the look she was giving him, stuck his tongue out at her as quickly as possible. His dad might even be tempted to smack him for such playground behavior. (Calamus's dad had never struck him, but watching himself do something so immature made him wish someone was here to chastise him for it.) But he turned his attention away from the b-rat and the useless and focused on the cleffa. Vega. Who'd done nothing wrong.

If you close yourself off to the opportunity, you most certainly will find it hard to make a new friend. But open yourself up to the possibilities, and I'm sure you'll find that plenty of your team would love to be friends with you, too.

He took a deep breath, and Calamus approached Vega from behind. The little thing seemed a tad busy, but Calamus didn't bother to see what he was up to. "Hey. You." He tapped him on the back with the blunt face of his hoof. "Want to be my friend?"

Sapphire turned at the sound of the bleat and-

Her breath hitched.

Calamus was alone. Not only without a chaperone, but without even the other child. More than that they were snot-nosed and puffy-eyed; the infant disaster had been crying, which Sapphire now knows is always connected to destruction. Sapphire felt her heart beating her chest: just how much more had this- this waste of flesh ruined her chances of ever leaving this arceus forsaken-place??? How much more of their wanton destruction was going to be heaped on her plate of dues to pay back.

She felt a snarl in her throat. "Calamus where is-"

"Orion will be here soon with your refreshments. I couldn't be bothered to deliver favors to lowlifes such as you lot. I've already eaten."

Sapphire glanced at Lu before turning to ask Calamus about where they had been and what the hell they had broken- but the useless sheep stuck out their tongue out at her- stuck their tongue out, as though they were infants on a rug- as though this was a game to them. The disgusting little nithling had made their already unbearable situation worse by setting a fire, and now had most certainly broken something else- and they were acting like it was all some playground game???

Sapphire's deep breath come out in growl; frigid air poured out of her mouth like a charizard's fire- promising harm in equal measure. For a split second she considers unleashing it on Calamus- on letting ice crash into their back and legs, bringing them to the ground before demanding they tell her exactly what sort of disaster they had unleashed upon the guild this time. On pushing their face into the dirt so they can look and feel like the filthily little child they've taken to acting like. On making them feel real consequences for their actions the way any adult in the north would-

It took every ounce of willpower she had to whip her head to Luella instead. Claws tensed into the ground and white teeth glimmering from the ice attack in her throat she leaned close. The low volume of her voice would be a blessing if not for the teeth so close to the grass type's face. "You need to do something about him now Leader-" she spat the word with such venom one would be forgiven for thinking she had poison in her veins- "before they do something else to indebt us further to the guild and we can never leave. They cannot be permitted to run around without supervision after setting a fire, breaking into and destroying guild property, and nearly fleeing yesterday." Sapphire paused, a dangerous glint in her eyes. "Now make that clear to him, before I do."

"Am I Mario's babysitter? Are you going to call me every time that guy blows his nose, or what?"
Orion keeps looking back at the injured Minccino. They feel responsible for her injury. That attack was meant for them.

It's more than that, though, and Orion will be honest with themself: Even though their mother is not here, they see echoes of her everywhere—from the Pokemon they want to protect to the Pokemon they need to protect themself from. They wish their mother was here. But she isn't. It's better that way. Still, it would be so nice to be able to be honest with someone else.

But they can't. It's not safe here.

It wasn't before the attack either. Maybe it's better that they've had the reminder. The truth could come out at any time.

"I apologize in advance, Vega-" The door creaks open, and the room is cold. The request to heal their companion dies on their lips. If they say anything, they fear retribution.

Even so, Sapphire is standing in front of Mrs. Lu, looming, threatening. A torrent of ice could freeze her solid. A lunar explosion could level her, like how the caves were-

Before the Elgyem can even think, the food is on the floor, and they are on top of the Chikorita, shielding her from the incoming blow.

With a small yelp, Sapphire hopped back a bit at the sudden appearance of Orion. All her fury and venom gone in an instant, melted away with the ice on her breath, and her face gave way to a look of doe-eyed confusion.

"Orion?" Sapphire asked with concern in her voice. She took some soft steps up the pair then laid down next to them so she could look Orion in the eyes. "Orion what's wrong are you okay?" The question came out gentler than anything Sapphire has said to them before. She waited for a moment before hearing the Chickorita groan from underneath the psychic pokemon. In an instant she's on her feet again. "Orion, you need to get up- you have to get off Mr. Luella-! Articuno above, are you alright?" She stand to their side ready to help both of them up.

It is born asleep, and it dies asleep. All its movements are apparently no more than the results of it tossing and turning in its dreams.
One would expect Luella to have noticed the instant Calamus entered the room, considering how intently she was keeping an eye out for them, but Sapphire's genuine offer to help look for him turned her attention to the vulpix. Sapphire had been very short with her all morning, was she finally feeling conversational? Luella could use some of that now, nothing like some small talk to ease her nerves.

She was about to ask what roll call orbs were when a familiar bleat snapped her head around.

"Orion will be here soon with your refreshments."

It was Calamus! Lands, and he looked terrible, his face clearly puffy and red from crying despite the princely air he was currently wearing. ~"C-Calamus??" She sputtered.

He continued without pause. "I couldn't be bothered to deliver favors to lowlifes such as you lot."

~"I..What?? Where's..."

"I've already eaten."

And then Calamus sauntered off with little more than a sideways glance at her, gone as suddenly as he had appeared, and off to....to talk to Vega???

Luella clutched her face. What just happened???

Steady old girl. No need to panic. No need to yell.

Look at him. Calamus was here, in front of her eyes, and he was not injured, and he was not freaking out, and people were not screaming about a fire. She reminded herself of this morning, that gentle voice he greeted her with. He was a child, one who had suffered a terrible tragedy, and despite the incident the day before he had woken up and was willing to put his best foot forward. Any number of things could have been said or done, whatever caused him upset was seemingly over now, with seemingly no damage...seemingly.

Best not to assume the worst.

Alas, Luella must have stayed rooted to the spot a moment too long because just as she was starting to collect herself Sapphire turned on her with a hiss. "You need to do something about him now Leader-" Luella winced and took a step back, but the words pursued her viciously. "...before they do something else to indebt us further to the guild and we can never leave. They cannot be permitted to run around without supervision after setting a fire, breaking into and destroying guild property, and nearly fleeing yesterday."

Luella blinked. Sapphire was mad. But of course, she assumes the worst. Why wouldnt she? She didnt know the source of Calamus' anguish, nor the escalation that had caused the fire, the tears, the unfortunate spark. Calamus didn't mean to cause a fire. He had run into the street crying for help. But what did that matter, all Sapphire knows is Calamus is volatile and dangerous.

And Luella had done nothing to control him.

"Now make that clear to him, before I do."

Oh. Of course, an ultimatum.

Sapphire was mad, and she certainly had right to be. Luella had not done anything to prove herself a competent leader, and Sapphire clearly resented that. Yes, of course. Who wouldnt resent submitting to an authority they didnt respect. She recalled when her daughter used to glare at her with those same dangerous eyes, and speak to her with that same disdain in her voice. Luella had spat that anger back in her face, how dare you speak to your mother like that! It didn't matter where the fault was, if she could raise her voice and silence her child then she was in charge. Until she wasnt. And then Beatrice was gone.

Oh how the past wearies the mind.

Sapphire's cold anger steaming out of the corners of her mouth like dragon's breath. Sapphire was angry because she still expected her to act like the leader. Sapphire was giving her another chance. Maybe Calamus will too?

All of the wind was suddenly knocked out of her as Orion came flying in out of nowhere, throwing themself on top of her. And now she was on the floor, covering her head from some perceived threat. But there was no danger. Luella lifted her head, groaning as she waited for the ground to stop spinning.

Oh hey! Orion was back! Just like Cal said, they had come back in one piece, just a little behind him. But why on earth....

It suddenly occurred to her that Orion had put themselves between her and Sapphire. Sapphire frantically ushered Orion off of Luella, all that venom gone from her voice. Looking at her now it really hit home how vicious she must have appeared from the outside lookign in. Oh dear sweet Orion. To throw themselves in front of a perceived threat for her, it almost brought her to tears.

Instead Luella let out a laughed. She couldnt help it! The whole team was back together and Sapphire looked downright flabbergasted at what just transpired. Her sudden concern for her wellbeing also touched her deeply. Luella let Sapphire help her to her feet, composing herself before turning to Orion and pulling them into a hug.

~"Are you quite alright?" Luella finally spoke, holding Orion at arms length and giving them the once over.

Something about being OK. Orion maintains their position. No one will hurt Mother while they are here. Soon, they will get bored, if they remain still and quiet. They always get bored eventually; no response means no further line of experimentation. Soon, they will hire another professor, and another student will fill their place on the roster. There will always be enough Pokemon in The Academy.

And soon they will be alone.

"Orion, you need to get up- you have to get off Mrs. Luella-! Articuno above, are you alright?"

Off of-

The Elgyem blinks rapidly. This is not their mother. Even so, they start to peel themself off reluctantly-

Until there is hug, Mrs. Lu is hugging them, and she's asking them if they're alright.

Which reminds them that there is someone who is not.

Still nuzzling into the Chikorita's embrace, they look at the Vulpix and a soft confession comes, "I thought you were going to hurt her."

They look past Sapphire to focus on the Minccino. "I am uninjured-" The glassy look in their eye indicates that perhaps there was harm done, albeit in a non-physical way, to them. "-but my companion here is. I must admit to being not as educated as I should about the abilities of healers. Can we do anything for her?"

And all around the Minccino, food! All this food on the ground, wasted!

Their one objective for the morning, failed.

The Elgyem's illogical body does not make a move to extract themself from the hug, but at least their brain has the good sense to dictate, "I should return to the mess hall to get new food."

Probably some kind of coding prank. Never seen outside of box 3. Is a slob apparently.
In the back of his mind, Vega could hear the clip-clopping that the Mareep made. He wasn't quite sure who was with them, given Orion's floating didn't make sound. Maybe a new friend? Vega wasn't going to worry about it.

Everyone was back together though, so Mrs. Iceberg wouldn't have to worry about the other not being here, which was good. The nice Breloom had been helpful about what they were supposed to do, so maybe Vega should go tell Mrs. Iceb-

There was a boomp on his head and a "Hey. You."

Vega turned back around to see the Mareep had decided to come talk to him. Vega gave a blink in surprise.

"Want to be my friend?"

Maybe practicing with the Breloom had made him good enough that his last greeting was now enough? It had been a good idea! Well, better not waste this chance to get along with the Mareep too!

"Yeah, I'll be your friend" chirped Vega. "I thought you didn't want to talk to me since I didn't introduce myself properly yesterday, so I was practicing!"

Vega gave a little pause, before realising.

"Oh! I thought I had to try to introduce myself again later on properly, so I thought you'd want me to not know your name yet. So I made myself not remember your name until I got the introduction right. I thought it'd be rude to know before that." he said with a little pride at managing to keep it up so far.

"So, I guess it's kinda like starting anew from now, right? So, my name's Vega, I'd really like to be your friend." said Vega with a smile.

"Yeah, I'll be your friend."

Superb.

"I thought you didn't want to talk to me since I didn't introduce myself properly yesterday, so I was practicing!"

"Not an inaccurate assumption," Calamus lied.

"Oh! I thought I had to try to introduce myself again later on properly, so I thought you'd want me to not know your name yet. So I made myself not remember your name until I got the introduction right. I thought it'd be rude to know before that."

… What???

Okay? That was strange. But it also sounded polite while his teammates' confusing behavior tended to be incredibly rude, so? ??? What a strange little thing to do, but, it seemed like Vega had been waiting in order to be polite so Calamus? Supposed he appreciated it? Okay.

"So, I guess it's kinda like starting anew from now, right? So, my name's Vega, I'd really like to be your friend."

Starting anew. That... didn't seem so bad.

Princely voice assumed. "Well, it is good to meet you, Vega. Your determination towards politeness is... admirable." Sure, admirable, why not. "My name is Calamus, and from now on, you will be my friend. You are not to stop being my friend under any circumstance. Is that acceptable?"

"I thought you were going to hurt her."

Yes. There it is. Luella considered Sapphire closely. Having been on both sides of that level of fierce anger Luella had not percieved a threat, the poison was in the words after all, but would Sapphire had hurt her? What could an old chikorita like herself even do if the ice type had decided to? Who would tell Mr Iceberg?

~”Sapphire would never hurt me,” she assured Orion, not knowing it to be true but saying it anyways. Children often lived up to what you expected of them. If you expect them to be dangerous, they quite often could be.

To answer her question Orion claimed to be uninjured. Luella frowned. Something had happened, Orion’s eyes were distant, more than usual, and they were tense in Luella’s arms. Calamus had been crying. Orion saw anger and immediatly assumed harm. It was not too hard to put two and two together. Calamus had attacked Orion.

But Orion continued to talk, so Luella let them talk, straightening out their academy jacket as she listened. She looked at Rose, food strewn all about her feet, and gave her an apologetic smile before assuring Orion that they would not need to make a second trip. ~”It’s quite alright, a little dirt never hurt anyone.” And it was true! Luella had eaten carrots out the ground all her youth and it did no harm. The oats may not be salvagable but the berries and fruit were unharmed.

~”but we’d best pick up our mess,” she determined as she set Orion on their feet.

She turned to Sapphire on her way over, not wanting her to think she was ignoring her previous comments. ~”Dont worry. I will speak with Calamus...and Orion later, when there are less people around. Is that alright?”

Approaching Rose she nodded a greeting. “Hello dear, I’m sorry if my children caused you any trouble. What seems to be...”

Rose’s fur smelled singed, and it stuck out like static. Luella’s expression darkened. ~”Did Calamus hurt you?” She asked bluntly in a low voice.

Tailsimp: The Impish Pokemon. Despite being quiet and reserved, this pokemon is usually very happy to talk and is always excited to help out!
Luella's laugh was probably the most confusing thing about this whole mess. She had been so anxious, Cal had been rude and reckless, she had... snapped at her- all before Orion threw themselves on her and the grass type was... laughing? Genuinely laughing?

Sapphire didn't bother to hide her confusion as she moved to Luella's side and helped her up. Sapphire worried she might be dizzy or hurt- or perhaps delirious going by her reaction- but the chikorita seemed to pull herself together fine. She quickly scooped Orion into a hug, asking if they were alright. And then-

Orion thought... that she was going to attack Luella?

Sapphire couldn't imagine the look of bewilderment on her face as she stared at Orion. Sapphire wasn't acting friendly to be sure, but to attack Mrs. Luella- of all pokemon- for no reason in the middle of a room full of pokemon!? Not just any pokemon either- one quick glance showed a room of pokemon much more powerful than Sapphire; many of which wouldn't hesitate to stop Sapphire in her tracks if she dared do something so heinous. Orion was many things Sapphire didn't like, but downright stupid was not one one of them. What could possibly have made them think that?

Luella asked if Orion was alright, and they said they were uninjured. Orion tried to indicate that someone else was hurt-

But Sapphire could see the strange look in their eyes- the posture still taut as they moved. She thought back to the desperate way they threw themselves over Luella and cowered on top of the old mon to protect her. The way they laid there waiting for the attack.

Sapphire had hunted more than enough to know that sort of desperation.

Her mind spun as she wondered for a brief moment who at the guild would possibly-

Ah, but it was obvious right? Cal coming in puffy-eyed, snot-nosed, and all alone. The idiot didn't just damage furniture this time, did they?

Sapphire felt rage bubbling in her chest again.

"It’s quite alright, a little dirt never hurt anyone" Luella said with a pep in her voice and step that seemed ludicrous all things considered. The chikorita put Orion down on their feet before noting they should clean up their mess. Sapphire followed her silently. She must have realized it too right? The way she frowned at Orion before- she had to have known? Right? Just as Sapphire began to feel annoyance build up again, Luella turned to her with a serious expression, her voice quieted down.

"Dont worry. I will speak with Calamus...and Orion later, when there are less people around. Is that alright?"

Sapphire opened her mouth to speak but promptly closed it at the sight right past the spilled food. A... oh shoot what was that species called again? A ... Cinccino? The strangers stood next to the mess of food silently, watching the group with some sort of wonder. Sapphire felt a bit awkward under the glance, wanted to say something about it- before noticing the mon's fur stuck out like-

Oh. Right. Orion had said their companion had been injured. Of course.

Luella beat her to reacting though, with a friendly greeting and a quiet question that Sapphire's ears picked up easily. She listened intently as she moved to pick up the salvageable food off the floor. If the new pokemon was indeed hurt, Luella (or Vega) were indeed much more capable of helping than Sapphire herself was. Besides, if she were honest, besides cracking Calamus's skull wide open for all to see that they- indeed- did not have a brain to speak of, she wasn't sure what to do.

As they walked to the meeting room, the Elgyem kept giving Rose concerned looks, no doubt about what had happened in the Mess hall. She didn’t say anything, but she gave them a reassuring smile.

Here we are!” Rose says as they reach the door to the meeting room. She opened the door and stood aside so the Elgyem could go in first.

"I apologize in advance, Vega-" they started before stopping short. In a flash they had bolted inside the room, dropping all the breakfast items they had brought with them. Dumbfounded by the normally subdued Elgyem’s sudden burst into action, she peered into the room to see what had happened. Inside she sees the Elgyem, now on top of a Chikorita, with what looked like a white Vulpix looking at them in astonishment.

The Elgyem, apparently named Orion, had thought the Vulpix was going to attack Luella, the Chikorita, and jumped in between them to protect her. What a sweet, if not very reckless gesture! Luella embraced Orion, and her and the Vulpix reassured them that the Vulpix had no intention to harm Luella, and asked them if they were okay.

"I am uninjured-" Orion said, their expression a dead give away that there was more to it than that, "-but my companion here is.” The Elgyem gestured in Rose’s direction, and Luella gave her an apologetic smile. Rose smiled and waved dismissively at the Chikorita, mouthing a silent 'it's okay' to her from across the room. After all, a few more minutes of charge to her fur wouldn't hurt. She hadn’t seen much of this team, but she felt they probably needed this moment.

After a few more words to her teammates, Luella sets Orion on his feet and walks over to where Rose was standing. “Hello dear, I’m sorry if my children caused you any trouble. What seems to be...” she starts, before taking a closer look at Rose. ”Did Calamus hurt you?” she said in a stern, low tone.

W-well, yeah I guess,” Rose stuttered, caught off guard by the sudden directness. “It was no big deal though! I just snuck up on em and startled them! Shocked me cause I shocked them!” she said with a wink.

It is born asleep, and it dies asleep. All its movements are apparently no more than the results of it tossing and turning in its dreams.

“By the light of Lunala, will you lot compose yourselves?!”

You did not notice the presence of the noctowl hovering over you until the squawk grates through your ear canals. You look up and take in the presence of the looming flying-type, with every feather tucked neatly in place and crystal spectacles perched on the tip of her beak. Her scowl was strong enough to rot a barrel of potatoes on the spot, it's whispered in the Guild halls, and it is that exact scowl that is fixed on you right now. The entire room has hushed to listen in on your scolding from the Guildmaster's right-hand lady, Adonis.

“Sprinting in the briefing room, snarling and spitting at each other, tackling your teammates. This is a Guild, not a CIRCUS!” Adonis squawks at you. She blinks, as if realizing she shouted before coughing and adjusting her spectacles. “By Lunala. You apprentices have only been here for less than a day and you're already causing such terrible commotion. Terrible! You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. And Almond, by Lunala, WHY ARE YOU PARALYZED?! She squawks aloud again before adjusting herself once more, and then she fixes Luella in her glare, narrowing her eyes as her voice lowers. “I recognize not all of these children are a part of your team, but you ought to do a better job controlling your stead if you do not wish to see them land themselves in more trouble. UNDERSTOOD?”

She coughs. “Understood?”

As the pokemon of the room cover their mouths and snicker at you, Adonis adjusted her spectacles once more. “Now, Brutus is here to see you about registering your team properly. Please go with him. You are not needed at the morning briefing today, and with the ruckus you've caused, I quite imagine that is a GOOD thing!” She gestures with a great, feathered wing to an exploud standing at the door and trying not to smile. “Almond, go with them. You will need to be registered for rescue work as well if we are to assign you to a team soon. Now go! Brisk pace!”

It seems as though you are dismissed.

You make your way over to Brutus, who is still trying not to smile. “You're the new kids, eh? Come with me.” He leads you out of the briefing room and a few doors down into a small, stone office with a rickety desk. He seats himself down pulls out from a drawer what seems like a mountain of paperwork.

“A'right. The new team and Almond. The Guild'll be registering you for rescue work, so we can send you out into the field eventually without getting in trouble with the higher-ups. The five of you'll be registering as a single team. Almond, we won't be putting you on a team just yet, but this'll let us slide you onto one without needing to do the paperwork later. You'll all be doing rescue work for the Guild as a part of your community service for crimes against the city of Snubbville.”

Brutus clacks the stack of papers against the desk to smooth them into a pile and pulls out an ink pot and a long, brown feather. “A'right. We're gonna be needing some specific information from each of you, and I'll fill out the forms. Gotsa be filled out by a Guild official.

"So we'll need: your name, a team name, your place of origin. Any major affiliations you have to schools, organizations, other guilds, and whatever.

"And we'll need an emergency contact for you all, some sort of family member we can get in touch with if something happens to you in the field. That'll be a name, type of relationship you have to the mon, as well as how we can contact 'em.

"We'll need to know about your rescue work experience as well as what skills and strengths you believe you can bring to your team.”

Brutus sets the papers down and leans forward over the desk. “And one last question straight from the lady Artemis: what's brought all six of you to Snubbville.”

With a clearing of the throat and the dip of a feather in ink, Brutus pulls up the first form. “Now who wants to go first?”

Probably some kind of coding prank. Never seen outside of box 3. Is a slob apparently.
Vega smiles along absently as the other Pokemon snicker. They were going to finally be registered, along with a Minccino (who had a super cool cloak) as well. Next step toward being a Rescue Team, here we go!

Before setting off with everyone, Vega made sure to turn back around and thank the Breloom for his help and say goodbye. Then he tottered along with the others down the hall.

Vega made extra double sure to listen carefully to Brutus about what he needed to say for getting registered. The part about 'crimes against Snubbville' flew right through one ear to another, totally hidden by the part about 'doing rescue work'.

"I can go first!" Volunteered Vega, excited to finally get to be on a team.

"My name's Vega, and I'm a Cleffa. I don't know what the team name is, sorry. I'm from a town called Hillspring. I don't have any filled knee nations, I think. I'm not too sure what those are, though."

He had to think for a moment about emergency contacts. He'd agreed that once he left, he had to stand on his own, so they wouldn't count, right?

"I don't have any sort of family member or someone to contact, because I'm just me."

Experience? Did the clouds count? They were almost a team, so maybe he should say, just in case.

"I got blown into a cloud dungeon with some other Pokemon. One of them disappeared when we got attacked by some Pidgeys. We found someone else stuck up there, but then a... a..." he struggled for the word "A sassy man killed two of the others, before Mr. Uragiri saved us. Does that count?"

Skills and strengths?

"I can use healing magic, and I have pretty good hearing. Plus I'm kinda tough too!"

Why did he come to Snubbville? That one was easy.

"After I got saved by Mr. Uragiri, the next thing I knew I was here in the clinic yesterday." said Vega, finishing as best he could. "Erm... was that everything?"

"Am I Mario's babysitter? Are you going to call me every time that guy blows his nose, or what?"
Orion catches, out of the corner of their eye, Sapphire started to pick away at the mess they've caused. They blink harshly as they hear it referred to as "our mess." Not only is that assessment illogical, it discounts that, even if this were not their sole responsibility (What were they thinking!? Mrs. Lu was not going to be attacked in the middle of a crowd!), this mess would be theirs to clean up.

Because it is easiest for them to clean up. Identifying the brown oats among the floor, the lights on their fingers flash as they begin to lift up from their telekinesis-

“By the light of Lunala, will you lot compose yourselves?!”

Their concentration is broken. The oats scatter to the floor. Orion knows what their mother would do: cover her ears and squeeze her eyes shut. But Orion has watched this exchange before: doing that only invites beratement for "rudeness" and further threats about "defect." Orion knows what to do. So does their mother. The difference is that they are capable of following the script; it is in handwriting they can read, however smudged it is.

And that they are not the target of the threats. Every error they make, after all, is the result of the failure of her experiment.

That's not true. They know it's not, but-

They do what they know they must do: lower their head in contrition. Although it is illogical to assume that a group of children forced into an establishment will immediately understand and comply to its regulations, one of the first lessons they learned was that logic is wielded by those with power.

So... not them.

The Noctowl finishes her rant, tossing responsibility of the group of children forced into an establishment illogically demanded to immediately understand and comply to its regulations to an Exploud, who asks for information for a form.

Orion is not sure what the others' experience with such documentation is, but they decide that they should probably go first, just to prove to them that these questions are standard, legitimate, non-threatening.

With all of the forethought that he had previously shown regarding binding contracts, Vega answers the questions... to the best of their ability. I am not sure if "sassy" is the best term to describe a murderer. It occurs to Orion that the Cleffa may have had an emergency contact before the murders.

It hits them a heartbeat later that Vega is not the only one in that situation.

That won't do.

"My name is Orion. We are Team Borealis." They show their uniform. "I am a student at The Academy. My emergency contact is my mother, Libra. She is a professor there." They turn back to the rest of their team. "If any of you are lacking an emergency contact, my mother would be happy to help you." It is the truth. The sudden influx of Pokemon might startle her, but as long as they can warn her about it beforehand... And even if not, she knows what it's like to have no one to go to for help. She would not have wished such a fate on anyone before that incident, and her experience has only solidified that conviction. The Elgyem looks back at the Exploud, Brutus. "She would be best contacted via mail, although The Academy does accept messengers for emergency communications." Yes, it might be suspicious for such a communication to come through, but they know that their mother has informed the bureaucracy of the plans of their leave. They approved the paperwork themselves!

Best of all, no "wax statue" would take on the responsibility of being emergency contact for a stranger!

As for their own skills... "I am a researcher, and I work well in groups—that is an important skill in the career I want to have."

That last question, though... gives them pause. Is the answer not obvious? "We were brought to Snubbville by Uragiri." Wait. No. This is one of those "trick questions"! "My objective for leaving home-" That is the question they really intended to ask! Why would they obfuscate their query!? "-is to bolster my résumé. There are not too many researchers with a background in Rescue."

Tailsimp: The Impish Pokemon. Despite being quiet and reserved, this pokemon is usually very happy to talk and is always excited to help out!
The newcomer verified what Luella and Sapphire had already known to be true. Amazing. Amazing! They- no, IT- was now attacking others at random! Amazing! How is the group supposed to do anything if-

Sapphire instinctively jumps away from the source of the squawk, drooping the berries to the floor once again. With a turn she stands defensively in between Lu (along with the newcomer) and the booming voice, her head lowered prepared for a fight that the rage in her chest had told her would be against Calamus.

But this wasn't Calamus; this was the Noctowl from the podium before- yelling about their conduct, how this place wasn't a circus (says the one screaming like a performer with glasses to match any ridiculous clown get-up to boot), before turning their ire to the newcomer that had arrived with Orion.

"And Almond, by Lunala, WHY ARE YOU PARALYZED?!"

The Noctowl took a moment to compose themselves, and Sapphire- frustrated at the idea of another mon stuck in debt that the disaster had most likely accrued- couldn't help but try to speak up. "Please, I'm sure that, er, Almond was not the one at fault for-"

She was ignored- of course she was ignored. Not a single damn southern mon cared that IT was the cause of the disasters. No one cared as long as someone agreed to pay for the damages and clean up IT's mess. Sapphire should have known- the south is as backwards as she was warned, why should she be surprised her mother was right about yet another thing?

With a deep breath she (outwardly) took her treatment in stride, choosing to turn to the newcomer instead of try to argue. "Almond, correct?" Sapphire offered, doing her best to keep her irritation for the Noctowl and general circumstance at bay. She tried for a small smile that didn't reach her eyes at all, but the tone of her voice showed the offer was an honest one. "Are you alright to move? If you need help, you can lean on me." Instinctively Sapphire moved up to Almond's side so she could lean if she wanted. It took a moment for Almond to agree and adjust; then they were on their way to the office. .

They reached the office in short order, and Sapphire quietly listened as Brutus ran through the basics of what was going on- the phrase "crimes against Snubbville" catching in her ears. A curious- if not suspicious- eye glanced over to Almond, Sapphire wondering what she could have done to wind up in a similar position to this group. Though, it doesn't matter what it was really; no one deserved to be stuck with this group as a punishment. Or at least with It. Sapphire's face turned from curious about Almond to apologetic.

Vega- somehow always excited no matter the circumstance- pranced up to sign and answer first. And his answers were.... disheartening, to say the least. Not having a family at that age isn't all that surprising to Sapphire- orphans are born of a bad winter or hunt-gone-wrong often in the North- but being blown into the clouds with others only to watch them murdered? One of them fell? Sapphire may have hunted feral beasts, but talking to a pokemon one moment and them being dead the next- right before her eyes- is something she's never had the extreme displeasure of experiencing. Vega's ever-cheery spirit was a thing of true wonder.

Orion went next to go up, talking about their mother and how she would take responsibility for all of them if need be. A sentiment spurred on by Vega's story perhaps? They then gave the rest of their information before stepping aside.

Sapphire took the chance to clear her throat and bring attention to herself- not wanting to move in case Almond still wasn't up to it. When eyes were on her, she offered a thanks before beginning. "I am Sapphire, Daughter of the Great Glaciers" she began once she was sure she had the floor, "and I am affiliated with the Northridge Point Guild- the farthest guild to the north. I worked with them as a local escort to rescue teams for over a year, doing most of my work with Team Tundra for the duration. I know they're in town, so I'm sure they can confirm this if need be."

Sapphire shifted her weight a bit, trying not to show the pride she felt at the thought of the work she did with such an amazing team. "Furthermore, my contact would be my parent, Ivory, who is best reached by mail to that guild, as they are loosely associated to it as well." They traveled there frequently on matters related to work, so it made sense to simply send mail there. After all, the post went no farther North than that. "As for my skills: thanks to the work I've done with Team Tundra, I feel well versed in the basics of rescue work. I was also trained as a huntress and excavator by my tribe, and received battle, strategy, and first aid training as part of my village's requirements to be seen as an adult and allowed to leave with blessings. I doubt my first aid is worth anything compared to Mrs. Luella's and Vega's, but it something that I can use if the situation calls for it."

Sapphire took a deep breath. "As for what brought me here- I left my home to conduct some personal research-" (that was hopefully enough information), "and got swept up in the Fo- *ahem* the draft- spurred on to join by a cohort of the king's extortion and theft of an important item of mine. That, is what brings me to Snubbville."

It is born asleep, and it dies asleep. All its movements are apparently no more than the results of it tossing and turning in its dreams.
Luella gave Rose a warm smile. She liked this little minccino, a positive thinker, polite and funny. She was clearly suffering from some measure of paralysis, a condition that Luella's healing magic could not fix, and she unfortunately did not have the tools to treat. A guild this big ought to have a clinic around...

Luella gave Orion a glance, their current state did not seem to match the levity of events that Rose described. Lu shall have to ask them about it later. Not that she didnt trust the minccino, but strangers often made light of situations in order to not upset, and Rose seemed very polite.

One thing was certain. Calamus shall need a stern talking to later. Luella wanted to believe the child had the best intentions, but he will need constant supervision like Sapphire demands if he continues to shoot his lightning around dangerously like this.

Rose seemed uninjured outside of the paralysis, but it was always better to ask than to assume. Luella turned back to Rose to ask her where she was hurt, if indeed there was somewhere she was hurt that Luella could address when...

OH WITH THE SQUAWKING

Luella felt herself shrivel as the giant Noctowl glared down at her, chastising first her team for causing a ruckus and then her directly for not keeping them in line. As if children were ever easy to contain. She had once been screamed at in the market when she had all three of her toddlers in tow, all three dumplings wailing like newly hatched tympole over something trivial. The situation was nowhere near comparable, in fact she would much rather be transported back to that moment than face the gauntlet dealt her now. Luella could only think to do one thing back then, so she did that one thing now: furiously bob her head apologetically until the scolding ceased.

Sapphire stepped in between her and the volume challenged arbiter. It was a small buffer but it was greatly appreciated it all the same. It at least gave her mind enough room to formulate a response.

~"I...I understand," she responded after the Noctowl asked the second time. ~"It was my mistake, I will be sure to keep better eye on them..."

As the words left her mouth her eyes immediately went searching for Calamus in the crowd, realizing it had been an interval since she last laid eyes on him. Vega was by his side, the two of them surrounded by snickering, whispering pokemon. Luella could feel her face cooking under the amused stares.

As the Noctowl directed them towards the Exploud, Luella sidled up behind Calamus and Vega bringing up the rear like a herd dog dutifully watching her sheep. That's sheep in the plural, she was watching all of them, but it would not be inaccurate to say she payed the actual sheep an extra bit of attention.

Luella furrowed her brow as they piled into the small stone office, there was enough dust in the corners of the room to make a koffing wheeze. The old rickety desk protested under the Exploud's weight as he leaned forward on it asking them the questions for their registration. It suddenly occurred to the old Chikorita that she had not paid attention as he rattled them off the first time, and blinked desperately trying to remember what the questions were.

Thankfully the ever eager Vega chirped up first, and she used this opportunity to extrapolate what all the questions had been.

"My name's Vega, and I'm a Cleffa. I don't know what the team name is, sorry. I'm from a town called Hillspring."

Luella sighed. So it was just general name/race/birthplace type information, of course. Standard stuff they would have patients fill out at the hospital back home. She smiled at Vega's excitement as he continued.

"I don't have any sort of family member or someone to contact, because I'm just me."

Luella's smile faded.

It had slipped her mind what the old Alakazam had said when Vega was first given into her care. "It's a terrible thing that happened to him honestly. I found him out in the north during a terrible tragedy... other Pokemon were with him, but a good few of them perished from an assassination attempt."

Luella's heart clenched. No child should have to go through that, and yet...

He wasn't the only one...

~"Oh dear," Luella muttered to herself, eyes drifting towards Calamus as Vega finished and Orion dutifully took the stage. Calamus' parents were murdered, and he was on the run because his life was in danger. If they make Calamus answer these questions now, that would put him in a very difficult position. But if they refused to answer the questions, they could get in trouble with the guild, not to mention hiding things from the rest of the team would be wrong. A team needs to trust each other if they are to work together, especially in one so disjointed as this one. Luella could feel her brain floundering.

"I need you to protect Calamus with your life."

Luella took a breath and slid in next to Calamus as Orion was finishing up. She sat close. She did not touch him. She did not face him. After a short while she leaned in and whispered, ~"I'd be happy to answer for you, if you would like, my dear." That was all she could think to offer before Sapphire cleared her throat to begin.

Once a mouse, now evolved into a rabbit. She is feeling comfortable and clean in her new skin!
“By the light of Lunala, will you lot compose yourselves?!”

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Calamus bleated in terror. He'd been so fixated on eyeing Orion and the minccino from where he'd been standing with Vega that he hadn't even noticed the noctowl. The mareep's heart nearly burst through his chest like a geyser, and he leaped a good few feet back as his sparks bounced harmlessly off of Vega and tried to disappear into the crowd.

Calamus grit his teeth in frustration as he felt his heart pounding, knees shaking, head beginning to spin. He was torn between mentally chastising himself for losing his cool at an old screechy noctowl versus blasting her in the face with a thundershock. He'd been calm. He'd been Zapdos-damned calm for all of TEN MINUTES AND NOW HE WAS STARTING TO FREAK OUT AGAIN AND DAMN THAT NOCTOWL DAMN HER DAMN HER-

But then she whirled on Luella. “I recognize not all of these children are a part of your team, but you ought to do a better job controlling your stead if you do not wish to see them land themselves in more trouble. UNDERSTOOD?” And Calamus felt a wash of gratification within him. He hadn't been paying attention to his teammates until now, but he gazed upon Luella bowing her head in terror, Orion's food all over the floor, Sapphire with hackles raised and the aghast look on her face as the noctowl completely ignored her like the little lowlife wretch that she was. And Calamus felt within him an emotion that had become so rare these days: absolute, utter delight.

He might have questioned how he'd come to feel delight at the suffering of others, if he didn't hate his damned teammates so much.

The noctowl had said something that was causing his teammates to now shuffle out of the hall. On the way out, Calamus bumped against Luella and shot her a smirk. "It was what you deserved," he snickered before trotting ahead. He then considered the prospects of what might happen if he stuck out his tail down low and tripped Sapphire.

He didn't. But he wanted to.

But as they shuffled into the stone office, Calamus suddenly started to feel nerves creeping up his back. This was weird. Why were they being brought to this tiny office? For more scolding from yesterday? Did the Guildmaster know about the window?! Once Luella entered after him, he made sure to put her in between himself and the exploud. Calamus hated explouds. They'd become banned from the castle outright at Calamus's request a couple of years back, and while Dad had rolled his eyes, Mom gave him a little hoof bump and told him she'd been hoping that would become a rule for years now. Oh the secrets they shared.

But Mom wasn't here to keep him safe now. All he had was this wrinkly old chikorita. What the hell use would she be against an exploud? Could he wrap her leaf around his head to muffle the noise?

Either way, he wasn't happy.

Then the exploud spoke. You'll all be doing rescue work for the Guild as a part of your community service for crimes against the city of Snubbville. A'right. We're gonna be needing some specific information from each of you, and I'll fill out the forms. Gotsa be filled out by a Guild official."

I-information? What???

"So we'll need: your name, a team name, your place of origin. Any major affiliations you have to schools, organizations, other guilds, and whatever."

NO! NO, WHAT?!

"And we'll need an emergency contact for you all, some sort of family member we can get in touch with if something happens to you in the field. That'll be a name, type of relationship you have to the mon, as well as how we can contact 'em. We'll need to know about..."

The exploud kept talking, but Calamus didn't listen. His ribcage was closing around his heart like a calcified fist. They wanted his information. They were going to know. The Guild was going to know what he was and it would go in his records that anyone could steal and if someone came to find him THEY WOULD KNOW. THIS WAS UNACCEPTABLE!

Calamus snarled. "E-excuse me! I d-don't, I don't take lightly to, to my personal information being-"

The exploud talked over him. Like he was nothing. “And one last question straight from the lady Artemis: what's brought all six of you to Snubbville. Now who wants to go first?”

A tendon in his heart snapped like a twig.

As his teammates pepped up to speak, Calamus receded quietly into a dark corner of his mind, alone with their thoughts. Nothing. Nothing. That exploud had just talked over him like he was nothing. Once, Calamus had held in the orb of his tail the power to ban an entire species from the grounds of a castle. He'd said the word, and his father had snapped his fingers, and the presence of the damned noise cannons had been eradicated overnight. One day, explouds had served the castle as announcers, town criers, alarmers, and announcers. The next day, they were gone. Calamus had done that. Calamus had spoken a word and upended the lives of dozens of pokemon. It had felt,

amazing.

But now he spoke a word and it was mowed over as if by a herd of bouffalant. Like he hadn't spoken at all. Like he'd said nothing. Like he was nothing. Like he was nothing. And it hit him, finally, that moment in the mess hall where he'd told Orion to obey and Orion had said no. Ileah hadn't said no. Ileah had said yes with a quick shake of the head and a panicked look in her eye. But Orion had turned around and said no and that was it. Orion didn't care if Calamus didn't like that. Orion did not care one bit if that upset Calamus, was torturous to Calamus. Orion had accepted his friendship one moment and then tossed it aside like a used, stinking dishrag. It didn't matter to Orion at all. As if Calamus were nothing. Nothing. Nothing.

The Prince would have silenced that exploud.

The Prince would not have hurt that minccino.

The Prince would not have broken that window.

The Prince would never have fled home.

Because the prince was dead.

Maybe... the prince had always been dead...

"Or was it a miscalculation to think of your abilities so highly..."

As soon as Calamus got the chance, he was going to slash Sapphire's face open with his hoof.

Luella suddenly leaned towards him, and Calamus startled. Lightning snapped under his wool. He shuddered in pain. "I'd be happy to answer for you, if you would like, my dear," she whispered. Rage snapped in Calamus like a bolt from black clouds, and it took everything in him not to clock her against the head.

"Never speak to me out of turn again," he hissed at her, quietly as Sapphire spoke to the exploud. Immediately he felt sorry, but he hoped the frown she'd get from his response gave her a taste of the hell he'd endured for weeks now. The prince was dead. The prince was fucking dead.

So as Sapphire finished, Calamus stomped his way to the front and shot her a look. "Yes, thank you Sapphire, but no one cares." He faced down the exploud as if for battle, but tried his best to keep his wool under control. Not the time for lightning. Not the time. It was the time to survive. If the prince was dead, and if Calamus's true story would put him in danger, then Calamus needed a new story. A new persona. And he needed to invent it, right now, before he lost the will.

"My name is Calamus," he said. He'd lost everything, but he was not losing his name. Not the name his parents had given him. Not ever. There were so many pokemon from Lightbeacon named in his stead that it didn't matter if it matched the prince's or not. "I'm from..." He wracked his brain trying to remember the villages and small cities that neighbored Lightbeacon. Lightbeacon was a crown jewel, the capital city of a small kingdom, but it was larger than a city-state. He had to pick somewhere new to have been born in, Lightbeacon was too obvious. But the villages, the villages, they were all so slippery in his mind. They'd never mattered until now, why would they matter now?! But then he remembered... a memory dressed in pink fur... of a paw stroking his head.

"Moja zlaty, don't be so dower about our trip. I know you are a little homebody, but this city is where I was born!"

"I'm from Spire," Calamus sighed, and something within him somehow felt just a little bit better. He loved Spire. He'd only gotten to visit a few times, but he loved running through the halls of Ampharos Manor, exploring the rooms, rummaging through the bedroom that had been his mother's childhood hideaway. She'd walked with him through the gardens, where topiaries grew in the shapes of Lightbeacon kings, and they'd sat by the pond eating the green apples that fell from a tree she'd planted there so many ages ago. He hoped that tree was still alive. He hoped Spire was okay. A part of him had always wished he'd been born in Spire.

"No major affiliations. I'm... of humble origins," Calamus murmured. "No rescue experience." He bit the tongue that leaped to say it was beneath him. "I just have my lightning, and my iron tail. I also have strong leadership abilities." He grimaced, and twisted his lip. Would Calamus from Spire be a leader? Could peasants lead? Zapdos, he wasn't sure if he was even ready to call himself a peasant.

Only the last question left. Emergency contact. Oh, what he would have given to give his mother's name. To share that she could be contacted at the Lightbeacon castle, and know for certain that if anything happened to him in the dungeons, in the dark, she would know. She would be there.

But his mother was rotting to bone and slop, and so was his father, and the prince was rotting with them.

The Calamus who stood before this exploud now was not the Prince.

He was not the Heir.

"I have no emergency contact."

He was the Mongrel.

"Sorry for the inconvenience."
