In most regions Dragon type gyms are usually the last gyms of the league as they hold such powerful beasts. In this region however the Dragon type gym focused on enlightenment through pokemon battles, and not on competitive battles, and therefore is only the sixth one, still it is one to beware of!

Long the gym master is a monk who appears to be in his 40s. He has a shaved head, a long black Chinese beard and long eyebrows, bright purple eyes, and he wears a red monks robe with a golden Rayquaza weaved on its back. He holds all his pokeballs as part of a prayer beads which he constantly holds in his hand. He is extremely agile and energetic and jumps from platform to platform, watching you as you complete the gym's challenge while encouraging you not to give up. He also has a special feature to his gym - once you enter, you can't leave until you defeat all his disciples (you are warned about that ahead of entering by an old man standing outside the gym).

His gym is in fact a tower temple, much like the ones found in Johto. In fact there are many clues that either he or his entire religious sect are originally from that region. In order to get to Long the player has to pass through many training obstacles, avoiding them by moving at the right time, and also jump between platforms and climb ladders. In between them he is faced with the other monks who serve Long, all of which have shaved heads, use prayer beads pokeballs, and wear orange robes (look much lke the generic monk trainers from Johto). They use pokemon such as: Dratini, Mienfoo, Charmeleon, Monferno, Hakamo-o, Faxure, Gyarados, and Dragonair.

Long's Team:
Dragonair (Male), lvl 37, Shed Skin, Dragon Tail, Iron Tail, Thunderbolt, Light Screen
Altaria (Male), lvl 36, Natural Cure, Dazzling Gleam, Sky Attack, Dragon Dance, Dragon Claw
Drampa (Male), lvl 38, Berserk, Dragon Pulse, Extrasensory, Fire Blast, Glare, holding Wise Glasses. (The Ace).

When you defeat him he gives you the Dragon Pulse TM and the Discipline badge which looks like a golden generic Chinese serpentine dragon in the form of a ring, circling a purple gem.

Next let's do Ghost 8.

This Pokemon would rather be doing donuts than fighting Ganon.
Anthony is an elderly Egyptian Pharaoh themed leader. He was recognized by Ho-oh as a young boy, and has grown into something of a national religious leader since. As with Blue, he was a champion at one point, and is widely revered for his wisdom. His gym, thematically appropriate, is a pyramid armed with traps to be avoided, or the player will be sent to the start. A Lucario will guide the player safely through the tomb, while ghosts will try to impersonate it and misdirect them. Rather than gym trainers, hostile ghosts will battle the player if followed.

Cofagrigus: 49, Mummy, Toxic Spikes/wil-o-wisp/hex/destiny bond. Custap berry.
Dusknoir: 50, pressure, Night Shade/confuse ray/pain split/disable. Quick claw.
Gengar: 50, cursed body, Hypnosis/confuse ray/Venoshock/Focus blast. Wide lens
Spiritomb: 52, infiltrator, Substitute/snarl/hex/rest. Leftovers
Palossand: 53, water compaction, Earth power/stockpile/shore up/shadow ball. Weakness Policy

Upon defeat, he gives the Judgement Badge, replicating a feather of Ho-oh. He also hands out the TM for safeguard, as a means to ward off 'evil spirits.'

A passionate bunch, Argentums are limited by their own minds. Who knows what happens when they break through their mental barriers?
Sylvia Celeste is the 5th gym leader, and is an architect, often responsible for almost every latest building found in the region. After a brutal accident as a child, Sylvia was left on the cusp of death, only able to survive via replacing some of her flesh with metal. Outcasted by her peers, she found peace with her Pokémon, steel types who weren’t completely flesh themselves. After graduating college, she started a successful career in architecture, and would later take over the 5th gym, the same gym she designed for an aging gym leader.

Sylvia is in her late 20s/early 30s, her short strawberry pink hair always tied in a ponytail and her gemstone-like eyes keeps her looking relatively young. Her left arm is mechanical, and she makes no effort to conceal it, silvery coloured plates protecting the inner mechanisms. She is often wearing overalls, a hard hat, and steel toed boots. Despite comes off quite cold, the young-ish leader is very polite and seems to be overly protective of the few friends she has. In addition, Sylvia is very calculated and is considered a quick thinker.

When you walk in, you find yourself in a mechanical wonderland. To reach her location, you must locate three model buildings scattered throughout the place, and place them correctly on a scale model replica of the town/city you’re currently in. This triggers an elevator to descend, and take you up to Sylvia.

She gives you credit for solving her puzzle before getting straight to the point.

Her team consists of:
Alolan Dugtrio/Sand Veil/Lv.32-
Sandstorm/Iron Head/Dig/Metal Claw
Lucario/Steadfast/Lv.32-
Metal Claw/Aura Sphere/Counter/Iron Tail
Lairon/Rock Head/Lv.33-
Iron Head/Take Down/Rock Slide/Metal Claw
Excadrill/Sand Force/Lv.34-
Metal Claw/Sandstorm/Dig/Rock Slide
Copperajah/Heavy Metal/Lv.35-
Zen Headbutt/Heavy Slam/Rock Smash/Bulldoze

After the battle, Sylvia congratulates you with the Industrial Badge and a TM for Metal Claw (I can make up TMs if I want to!)

Been a while since I last did one, eh? How about Dark 7?

Gym puzzle is set in an abandoned mall, crawling not only with gym trainers but with random wild Pokemon (mostly Golbats and Scraggys with a few Trubbish or Magneton if you're lucky) as well presenting an additional hazard to the player. To reach the leader, you have to find which store he's bumming out in and open it up by beating a set amount of trainers, any more and you'll have to rebattle a few to open his door again

When defeated, he hands out the Junk Badge and the TM for Payback.

Well, her Pokédex No. is #274, which is Nuzleaf. Could anything be more hilariously fitting for this forum?
Bug 4 - Vanessa

(Name origin: Vanessa is a genus of brush-footed butterflies in the tribe Nymphalini.)

Vivillon Lv. 25 - Compound Eyes (PoisonPowder, Supersonic, Struggle Bug, Gust)
Beautifly Lv. 27 - Swarm (Silver Wind, Mega Drain, Attract, Stun Spore)
Butterfree Lv. 28 - Compound Eyes (Air Slash, Whirlwind, Bug Buzz, Psybeam)

In addition to being a gym leader, Vanessa is the curator of a butterfly house (which also doubles as the gym). She loves giving informal presentations to visitors about the different bug-types that live there. Most of the pokemon in the building are ones that she raised herself, from tiny caterpillars and cocoons into fully evolved butterflies. While she loves her bugs, she’s been quoted saying that if she wasn’t a bug-type specialist, she would happily be a flying-type specialist instead.

In order to fight Vanessa, you first need to catch her three butterfly pokemon, who are flying around in different parts of the building. If you approach them too quickly, they will fly away and hide behind a gym trainer, who you are then forced to fight. Once you bring Vanessa’s pokemon to her, you can challenge her to a gym battle.

Upon winning, Vanessa will give you the Flutter Badge and the TM for Bug Buzz.

^ I love the concept of a butterfly house gym! I grew up near one and I think they're really neat. And there are so many moth and butterfly mons...

Late game rock gym leader? Gimme gimme I love theorycrafting those so much!

Golem (36) - Rock Blast/Bulldoze/Sandstorm/Stealth Rock
Relicanth (37) - Rock Tomb/Surf/Bounce/Stealth Rock
Crustle (36) - Rock Blast/X-Scissor/Flail/Stealth Rock
Archeops (38) - Ancientpower/Pluck/Crunch/Stealth Rock

Biyu's gym is set in a china shop, filled with shelves upon shelves of beautiful (and fragile!) porcelainn wares. You can find her right at the back sipping a cup of hot tea. Biyu takes pride in how skillfully and carefully her massive rock types can battle despite their immense power, claiming that she and her gym leaders hone their finesse by staging fearsome battles amongst fragile china. Of course, she's not so fragile herself... Upon being challenged to a battle, she will calmy stand up, finish her tea, and throw aside her cloak to reveal her toned body before crushing her tea cup in her hand.

Next up... Grass 3

Morell is a young trainer, only 15 years old. He is very pale, has brown hair styled in a "mushroom cut", wears very thick red glasses, a purple-burgundy colored jacket with yellow polka dots on it, and beige cargo pants. He has a very large backpack the same color as its jacket, which give him the slight appearance of a mushroom from certain angles.

His gym is as moist semi-natural cavern, with parts that are built in a modern greenhouse or lab like fashion where the researching crew works, and parts that are completely wild. He lives there with his father who is a known fungi researcher, and the trainers that you have to fight are his lab assistants are who pokemon such as Foongus, Morelull, Shroomish, Ferroseed, Gloom, Dwebble, Shuckle, and Binacle. The gym is a maze where you can easily get lost, and whenever you defeat a trainer a Flash is activated which helps you find your way (you can also talk to the researcher trainers after you defeat them to ativate the Flash again).

Morell's Team:
Parasect lvl 26 (Male), Effect Spore, Spore, Leech Seed, Nature Power (Which turns into Power Gem), Leech Life.
Shiinotic lvl 26 (Male), Effect Spore, Ingrain, Confuse Ray, Giga Drain, Dazzling Gleam.
Breloom lvl 27 (Male), Effect Spore, Stun Spore, Counter, Mach Punch, Seed Bomb, holding Bright Powder (The Ace)

When you defeat him he gives you the Seed Bomb TM and the Mushroom badge which looks like a classical toadstool red and white mushroom (the fly amanita).

Next I'd love to see Flying 8.

Alright, here we go!

The town of place has a really nice mountain halfway through the route leading there, and a really nice view of all the surrounding area when you get to the top.

Orville is a tall and lanky teenager. He receives you sitting in a wheelchair, wearing a bunch of green. His gym has a bunch of different landscapes painted on the approach. His room is the best painted, and it looks like the top of the mountain. He talks about how he read a bunch of books about the beauty of the natural world. He talks about how much he cried when he realized he didn't have the ability to go on the hikes he'd always dreamed of. He then waxes poetic about his birds, and how they took him to see the sunset from the mountain near the town. He then slyly smiles at the challenger, and offers to fly them to the Pokemon center after he beats them.

Staraptor, level 46: Intimidate (Quick Claw) (Close Combat, Fly, Roost, Return)
Honchkrow, level 46: Insomnia (Lum Berry) (Sucker Punch, Fly, Night Slash, Confuse Ray)
Aerodactyl, level 48: Pressure (none) (Thunder Fang, Ancient Power, Fly, Protect)
Gliscor, level 49: Hyper Cutter (Leftovers) (Earthquake, Aerial Ace, Baton Pass, Swords Dance)
Dodrio, level 50: Early Bird (Silk Scarf) (Tri Attack, Quick Attack, Drill Peck, Jump Kick)

Three Full Restores, five Hyper Potions, one Full Heal.

When you beat him, he smiles, and tells you that he has another story to tell his friends, before presenting you with the sunset badge.

He gives out the Fly HM when beaten. His gym has ramps, the gym trainers attack you along the ramps from hidden alcoves, and when you reach the top, the camera zooms out to let you see the mural before you go to the next room.

Next, how about Fire 5?

Gym Design: you entered the gym, which doubles as a firework factory. but dont worry, the gym battle isnt inside of the factory, its the open area behind it. after learning some unrelated firework info, and answering the questions that is related to fireworks, you reash the gym leader. if you answer wrong, you will need to figth against a gym trainer. dont worry about the attacks, which cant damage the factory workers and powders thanks to psychic barriers and you are outside of the factory.

Final Battle: after reaching Ember, she welcomes you and hopes that you learned something about fireworks. then she accepts your challange, pulling a pokeball.

Even though she is probably somewhere at her late 20s, it is quite hard to tell Mirai's age at first glance - She is tall, skinny, very pale, has huge bright red eyes, and a very faded green long hair that she wears in a messy bun. She wears a bland grey long old style dress that gives her the appearance of an old lady, and on top of it a short green jacket that gives her a much younger style (in case you missed it so far, her looks is heavily inspired by Gardevoir, her Ace pokemon). She never looks directly at the player, and often gazes right next to them in an eerie manner, as her head is very slightly leaning to the side of her body. She is a notoriously difficult gym leader in her region, so you better be ready! Well, as ready as you can be fighting someone who specializes in seeing the future.

Her gym looks like a very ordinary building with long corridors, lots of rooms, and single big colored buttons in some of them, but much like in her case, first looks can be very deceiving. As you walk into certain rooms you find yourself back where you were a few moments ago, as if time itself bounced back. After you do that, you notice a shadow of yourself repeating again and again this very same last action. In fact, the riddle/mini game of this gym requires you to use these little time jumps to make sure you press two colored buttons at the exact same time using those shadows, so that you can open certain double colored doors (A bit like some of the riddles in the wonderful game "Braid"). As you make your way you of course fight a few of the gym trainers. All of them have a unique appearance, different from one another, and no clear theme, yet they all share that bizarre unfocused gaze Mirai has. They use pokemon such as Kirilia, Gothorita, Kadabra, Sigilyph, Lunatone, Bronzor, Duskull and Whiscash.

Once you finally meet her Mirai she speaks to you in what seems to be riddles saying things like "PlayerName, yes... it is indeed the right time" without being introduced, and "Ah I remember our battle, it is going to be a very memorable one for both of us".

Mirai's Team:
Meowstic (Female), lvl 33 Keen Eye, Future Sight, Psybeam, Shadow Ball, Psychic Terrain.
Absol (Male), lvl 33, Pressure, Future Sight, Psycho Cut, Night Slash, Fire Blast.
Xatu (Male), lvl 34, Synchronize, Future Sight, Tailwind, Air Slash, Light Screen.
Gardevoir (Female), lvl 35, Synchronize, Future Sight, Dazzling Gleam, Double Team, Wish, holding Wise Glasses. (The Ace).

After you defeat Mirai she gives you the Future Sight TM (in case you think that's OP I guess she can give you Calm Mind), and the Future Badge which looks like a bright red eye.

Next how about Bug 6?

Redninjapuffles are known to want to create their own nuzlocke stories or comics, however, many have yet to start one.
Matthew is rather young for a gym leader, only 18, he has brown hair, green eyes, is short, and is pale. He grew up camping at nearly every chance he could as Matthew, or Matt as his friends call him, was a big fan of the outdoors. Matt wears boy scout clothing, complete with a green shirt, green hat, and a pair of badges to go along with it.

Matthew's gym isn't inside, but outside, it has a bunch of trees spread around along with bushes and logs. When you first enter the gym, Matthew meets you himself, saying the only way to challenge him is to get all 3 badges for completing camp tasks
1. Set up a tent
2. set up a fire place
3. Roll logs
You can get these badges in any order you please. To get the tent, simply play a small minigame to hammer in a tent. To set up a fire place, you must gather materials like rocks, sticks, and fire wood, you must battle trainers to get these items. And finally, get to the top of a mini mountain and roll a log down a hill while clearing the road by battling trainers.
Once you get to Matthew with all three badges, he congratulates you for your efforts, and invites you to battle.
Here is his team:
Accelgor (male) lv.35 sticky hold, struggle bug, U-turn, giga drain, water shuriken
Scizor (female) lv.36 technician, bullet punch, U-Turn, Iron defense, wing attack
Ribombee (female) lv.36 shield dust, U-turn, Pollen Puff, draining kiss, aromatherapy
(ACE) Orbeetle (male) lv.37 Swarm, Bug buzz, U-Turn, Psychic, Giga drain
When beaten, Matthew will congratulate you for being able to get all the badges but also best him in battle, he hands you the camp badge and tells the player that all people should enjoy nature and the outdoors a bit more.
Look at all this mid game gyms, lets do early game, electric 1?

Alright time to really start stretching my thinking muscles. Imma lay it out rn, I'm gonna be boring and use the same person for all of these but I will want to hit every gym level and every type eventually so here we gooo!

Ara is the head of the battle training section of the daycare she works at and therefore functions as the facilities gym leader for anyone who need to grab a badge. Though she doesn't specialize in any one type and will rotate each group out to keep competitiors on their toes. She prefers to use her favorite and personally bred pokemon in all of her fights.

Heliolisk, lvl 11
Ability: Dry Skin
Moveset: Parabolic Charge, Bulldoze, Charge, Quick Attack

Magnemite, lvl 13
Ability: Analytic
Moveset: Supersonic, Gyro Ball, Rain Dance, Thunder Shock

Mareep, lvl 15
Ability: Static
Moveset: Magnet Rise, Charge, Charge Beam, Body Slam

When beaten, Ara hands outs the Static Badge and lets the challenger know they can come back anytime for a battle or to drop off their pokemon.

This Pokemon is a master of having too many projects at the same time. Also, Pikablu.
Okay damn I've loved this thread so far, here goes my first addition:
Fen is a slightly chubby, suntanned lady on her 30s who tends to wear floral-patterned dresses. She has brown eyes, and wears her long blonde hair in a ponytail. Alongside her gym, she runs a perfume shop in her hometown, and she forages and cultivates all of the ingredients for her fragrances with the help of her Pokemon team.
Her gym is decorated as a floral meadow, functioning as a maze with multiple rooms that sometimes loop around nonsensically (think Kalos Route 20, Winding Woods). The trainers within are Aroma Girls (obviously), and you start smelling more and more of a sweet aroma whenever you take a right step toward Fen's chamber.

Team:
Cottonee, lv. 21
Ability: Prankster
Moveset: Mega Drain, Stun Spore, Growth, Fairy Wind
Cutiefly, lv. 22
Ability: Sweet Veil
Moveset: Sweet Scent, Stun Spore, Absorb, Draining Kiss
Aromatisse, lv. 24
Ability: Aroma Veil
Moveset: Misty Terrain, Sweet Kiss, Echoed Voice, Draining Kiss

On defeat, Fen gives you the Aroma Badge, along with the TM for Draining Kiss.

For the next one... well, how about a Fighting 8 gym?

There are so many good ideas in this thread, I really wish some of them would be used in ROM hacks.

Anyway, here goes:

When you first gaze at Chiron's gym as you enter the city it is located in, you are filled with a great sense of awe. A giant marble ancient amphitheater towers before you, with a grand modern building that stands before it. You enter the building which turns out to be a giant hall, filled with pieces of ancient and modern weaponry and armor, and a display of mannequins each representing some of the greatest heroes of fable and their pokemon (each with a description about how using their bravery and their pokemon allies they managed to save their local region). At the end of this hall you see a great door and a clerk waiting next to it. The clerk tells you that you are now standing in the "Heroic Gym", and that many famous heroic trainers have passed through here and trained here over the ages with great master Chiron. He tells you that in this gym you must face 3 challenges, and only then can face master Chiron in battle. He tells you to step forward only if you are ready.

As you enter the door you find out that you are now in the great arena of the amphitheater. As you walk forward the doors behind you close and the crowd cheers as you are being presented as the challenger of the day. Then, two trap doors open in both sides of the stadium and two charging wild pokemon rush towards you. A double battle begins vs a Copperajah and a Pyroar. You must defeat them and catch one of them. If you accidently faint them both, a new pair will come right after them, and so on.

As you tame them, next enters a powerful looking trainer wearing a gladiator helmet and a battle begins (you are not allowed to heal your pokemon in between them). He has a Machoke, Pangoro and a Primeape.

After you defeat him the entire arena is flooded with water. Lots of galleys start sailing into the arena and recreate a great historic battle, and the crowd cheers. You make your way moving from ship to ship, until you face a trainer dressed as a captain of an ancient ship who tells you he was an apprentice of Chiron for years, that he taught him everything he knows about strategy and pokemon battle, and he battle you. He has a Poliwarth, Grapploct and Falinks. He then heals your pokemon.

After you defeat him you reach the final platform. The crowd cheers wildly and all the galleys leave the arena and the water is drained. Then, enters Chiron, riding in a very theatrical manner a great armored Rapidash. He is a man in his 50s with long white hair in a ponytail and a thick white beard, and wears a laurel wreath on his head as well as clothes that over emphasize his muscular build. He gets down from his Rapidash, introduces himself as "Master Chiron, the teacher of all the greatest heroes". He tells you that he has trained many heroic trainers from around the world, as well as the champion of your current region. He tells you that the Fighting type is the type of heroism and brave deeds, as well as practice, dedication and strategy, and knowing how to combine them is the key to doing great things. He tells you that he is about to teach you a lesson, and the crowd goes wild and the battle begins.

Team:
Medicham (Female), lvl 45 Pure Power, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Poison Jab, Zen Headbutt.
Herarcross (Male), lvl 46 Guts, Megahorn, Close Combat, Counter, Bulk Up.
Sirfetch'd (Male), lvl 45, Steadfast, First Impression, Knock Off, Revenge, Steel Wing.
Hawlucha (Female), lvl 46, Limber, Flying Press, Sword Dance, Roost, Acrobatics.
Gallade (Male), lvl 47, Steadfast, Close Combat, Psycho Cut, Swords Dance, Stone Edge. The Ace.

After you defeat him he says he sees great potential in you and that you remind him of the local champion when he was younger. He gives you the Heroism badge that looks like a Greco/Roman helmet sitting on a sword, whose handle is a pokeball. You are also given the Close Combat TM.

Next how about (randomizes type and number) - Dragon 3?

I seriously don’t think a Dragon TM that isn’t totally broken at the 3rd gym exists. Let’s say that maybe Dragon breath became a TM again and he gives that out.

Appears to be some weird temple. You are then ambushed by 3 trainers who guide you into a mysterious sphere. You must answer 3 questions, get one wrong, you face one of them. Get one right, the sphere elevates into a very high up room to the leader.

Character:
His design appears to be some very weird looking dude with a wacky hairstyle that seems long, yet pointed upwards. He wears weird looking robes that cover his body, and holds a wooden staff. Some parts of his robes seem to be torn.

Calen’s personality is known to be relatively arrogant, edgy, and spoilt. He constantly brags about himself and how powerful his dragons are and how they can reduce your speed to nothing and flinch everything to death. For some reasoning battling doesn’t change his way of thinking, but it does make him hand out his Ancient badge.

Fire 4 is up next, possibly.

Gym leader is a chef, who inherited the gym from their parents as a gift. Not the best at puzzles, but if I had to pick something, the puzzle would have food involved somehow... maybe it's a bit like Overcooked, you have to go around and get ingrediants, but then you also have to battle trainers if you run into them or... smth lol.
The gym battle itself is a double battle. Upon defeat, they give you the Ignite Badge and the TM for Incinerate.

I wanna see Ice 1 please. :3

So wonderful to have this thread be active again.
Gym Leader Nicholas is an old large man who loves Christmas, just like the rest of his quaint village which makes up the first gym location. Nicholas' gym is located in the mall in the center of town, the largest building in the village and operates as a normal mall during and outside of gym battles. Nicholas himself works as a year-round mall Santa and loves to put smiles on the faces of children. Any challenging pokemon trainers must collect gifts from the mall and find the right person to deliver it to. However, the young children who you deliver presents to will be so excited that they just have to battle you! The gym trainers use Alolan Sandshrew and Vulpix, Smoochum, Spheal, Galarian Darumaka and Vanillite. After all four presents have been delivered, you can finally battle Nicholas.
Nicholas' Team
#1 - Delibird, Level 12, Vital Spirit - Present, Icy Wind
#
2 - Snorunt, Level 13, Inner Focus - Icy Wind, Leer, Astonish, Double Team
#3 - Galarian Mr. Mime, Level 14, Vital Spirit - Icy Wind, Pound, Confusion, Reflect

If you can defeat Nicholas, he gives you a hearty congratulations, before awarding you the TM for Icy Wind and the Mistletoe Badge!

Next up... Flying 5!

I hope I didn't make it too hard for a retail game and too easy for a difficulty hack. I'm not exactly the best when it comes to competitive play, lol.

Living in one of the largest cities of the continent, Flynn sees a lot of small businesses get passed over again and again in favor of the major competitors in the touristy areas.

His gym is a tower and as a way to show support, to climb each floor you must answer a question, often mentioning and plugging small businesses. Trainers that don't know the answers can learn them from birds - like Murkrow or Chatot - in the gym.

When they reach the tower summit, they'll face Gym Leader Flynn.

Beatrice has always been a fan of haunted houses, so when she became a gym leader, it was only natural for her to convert the gym into a haunted maze.

Gym puzzle has you traversing through a pumpkin maze, and you have to find your way to the end, battling trainers along the way. When you reach the end, you battle the gym leader.

this master of winged beasts knows almost everything about flying type pokemons that is known by the man. His rage is dangerous to others around him
dark 6, Eh? its time to dive into shadows - LV between 35-40

the gym theme: Casino
the Gym doubles as casino/game corner. as you can play games and collect coins that may give you some good TM's with reasonable price
inside of the gym is filled with many casino attractions like slot machines, and roulette tables. and every gym trainer uses some kind of luck in one way or another in their battle. like one uses confusion, and one uses thunderwave.
the Gym leader: Ovner of Casino: Lorenzo. he is a man of luck, and he is a lucky guy himself. his pokemons have at least one move and/or ability and/or item that test your luck in one way or another.

PKMN 4: Malamar/Contrary/LV 39/Psycho cut-Pluck-Hypnosis-Dark Pulse/Holds Sitrus Berry
after Victory, he says something about luck being running out even for the owner of casino, and gives you the casino badge, which looks like a casino coin, and TM for Dark Pulse. did ya know that grimsley of Unova Elite 4 regularly visits this gym?
next time in Gym Improv: Steel 7
