I’m so glad I have a buffer for this run. My writing schedule is a mess and a half and y’all don’t deserve to be subjected to that. That being said, Part 35 will be the final main story portion of the run. Everything else will be post game!

actually we don't know the cause for most extinction events. hell, even the cretaceous-paleogene one is just a well thought guess, and even the most recent pre-holocene one is mostly guesswork.

i think one of the only ones that's really pinned down is, like, the Middle Miocene, because it happened to coincide with a lot of tectonic movement that fucked up a bunch of ocean currents and caused temperatures to go haywire everywhere as a result. hell, the end-jurassic "extinction" technically wasn't even really an extinction event as far as evidence suggests, even though we thought it was one for years.

ironically the only one we really do know a lot about is the late devonian one, because it's useful for oil companies :v though even there we're not certain if the oceans suddenly losing their oxygenation was a cause of or symptom of the extinction, or to what degree it's both.

(we also know what the holocene extinction is because, well, as they say in the business, "you best start believing in mass extinction events, you're in one."

Raptin is a tough nut to crack; his support effects are no joke, and I want to keep him from getting into the SZ if I can. Luckily, he’s air-type, and we have the perfect counter to that nonsense.

Hnnn I don’t like any of this. Raptin immediately gunning for the SZ, Sasha getting targeted over Ducky… maybe I should’ve brought Star and tried to use S-Combo to force switches.

Thankfully, the Master Rank FP Boost gives us some room to work with, and Sasha will be able to boost her defense while still allowing Ducky to attack.

Raptin’s out next turn. I’m going to try and use Ducky’s Confusion skill to force Dinomaton to switch.

This is a really clever plot resolution and I like it a lot :)

First thing he does is wake up and nerd out about his escape plan. What a scientist.

Right, he already has a hiding place picked out. Can do!

But… before that… we have some decisions to make. Namely, we need a replacement team member for Sasha.

I think… I think Scale is the best choice. His support effect is similar, and he’ll be a bulky addition for the next few fights. Type matchups don’t matter anymore--all of our opponents are neutral--so that doesn’t need to be brought into consideration. He needs training, though. And fossils.

Hmm, weird, it seems like we’ve seen these screens before… must be deja vu.

Scale is still needing levels. I think I’m actually going to attempt grinding in this game for once. It can be a bit of a pain, which is why I rarely do it.

To do it, you have to go to a Dig Site and find an NPC. These people rotate through a few areas and have a random team. Since Benji is Master Rank, they all give 10 BP per fight. Annoyingly, there are only 2 or 3 in each Dig Site, so you have to keep leaving and returning to fight them. In addition, they’re fairly tough! The fighters in Greenhorn Plains have Vivosaurs that can hit Rank 8. Benji will be careful, though.

Okay, Rank 8 is what I wanted, I can just stop… Ducky is seriously one point away. I can’t let that stand.

Bam!! Ducky has reached their final rank! Star has too, for that matter! I’m so proud of them!!

Umbrella also gained a level, and Benji played some hide-and-seek to get his mind off things. Then Scale hit Rank 9, and I decided that’s good enough for now.

It’s time to progress! But we won’t be doing that until next time. See you then.

What we need to do is talk to the Info Clerk. After some testing, I determined that each time you enter the shop, he’ll select up to two new pieces of information to tell you about. Every time he talks to you, he’ll either say something about one of those or something about a piece of information he gave you on a prior visit. Since you NEED to talk to him for the Dig Site entrance to appear, this part of the process was a real pain.

This is Nodo! Check out those support effects, they’re just as good as Sasha’s! Attacks are just about as underwhelming, but Power Scale is an interesting move that could end up being useful in the future.

Hey y’all! I’ve got a quick question before we get started. I’ve begun doing the Postgame, and I am realizing that there is potentially a very big problem with it. Namely: Essentially every major fight features max-rank Vivosaurs and actual good AI. Although these battles are definitely Nuzlockable, after making it through one of the easier bouts by the skin of my teeth, I’m realizing that taking them on with my current ruleset is going to involve a LOT of grinding up new team members when old ones don’t survive. Given that grinding in FF Postgame is absolutely terrible, I propose an alternative ruleset for the post game; a Nuzlocke ‘Lite’, if you will. Namely, for the post game fights, I propose that deaths only count in the event of a full team wipe. I’ll still try to prevent all defeats, of course, but I think this rule will make the gameplay less stressful and grindy for me and (Hopefully) a bit more entertaining for y’all! I’m putting it to a poll, but I’d also like to hear thoughts in the comments if anyone has an alternative idea :D

Like the BB Base, there are roaming guards on the Starship now. They’re Dinaurians, and they’ll attack with Dinomatons if you get too close.

Despite this, they… aren’t very threatening. As a result, it’s not long before we make it back to the Main Idol’s chamber.

This must be why Dynal allowed us to roam free. He was hoping for one final battle, to prove to Benji that his ideals are flawed. Unfortunately for Dynal, I don’t intend to lose.

Remember Raptin’s support effects? Dynal’s are worse. Much worse. Mom come pick me up I’m scared--

I’m not taking chances again. Star is coming along; hopefully she’ll be able to force some switches.

Scale’s battle debut is a welcome one; Dynal can hardly do any damage to Garret. Unfortunately, being unable to switch could prove to be a big problem.

Dynal is going to keep renewing that Excitement for as long as he’s alive; I just hope Garret can take enough hits to make it through.

Effective as ever, Dinomatons. Better this than Dynal saving up FP, though.

Ideally, I want one of these Dinomatons to be dead before Dynal comes back out.

Even with Dynal’s detrimental support effects, Garret still has a pretty solid defense boost. Incredible.

Hm, no switch. After this battle and a few others, I’ve started to wonder if S-Combo’s secondary effect only activates if Star is in the AZ.

Okay, new plan! Let’s aim for confusion. You’ll notice that I haven’t been attacking with Garret at all, and it’s for a simple reason: I don’t trust him with that accuracy debuff.

And we’ll throw in one of Star’s attacks for good measure. Again with no switch…

Perfect, Dynal switched of his own accord! Now Garret can absolutely wail on him.

Just the tiniest sliver of health left! Next turn we’ll be sure to triumph.

This Dinomaton should be easy to KO in the next round. Since I don’t want Dynal unleashing any of his strongest attacks, I will not be finishing it off this round.

This is, hands-down, my favorite scene of the game. It was so mind-boggling to me as a kid that the game introduced the concept of humans evolving from extraterrestrial life, only to tear that argument down later on. I still really like this sequence for that reason today; there’s also something really satisfying about learning that life on Earth beat its own path.

In hindsight, you probably should’ve kept a few Dinaurians awake to monitor this whole process, dude.

Abso-blimmin'-lutely! If the postgame is even half as bad as trying to grind new teammates in Johto, I say go for it! (I once had the death of my main Bruno counter RIGHT AT THE END OF VICTORY ROAD in SoulSilver. The grind was so bad I wound up just going in with a team of 5. I mean I won, because Cassie and her Corsola were UNSTOPPABLE, but it was close!)

This is, hands-down, my favorite scene of the game. It was so mind-boggling to me as a kid that the game introduced the concept of humans evolving from extraterrestrial life, only to tear that argument down later on. I still really like this sequence for that reason today; there’s also something really satisfying about learning that life on Earth beat its own path.

As someone who went through the traditional 'dinosaurs are the BEST!' period of childhood, this is both SO COOL and pretty scientifically accurate. This game is enjoying the hell out of teaching kids history!

Okay, let’s talk strategy. Each of Guhnash’s brains have a gimmick. Some of them are worse than others, but the one MAJOR advantage Benji has is Support Effects--although the brains HAVE them, they aren’t very good. In addition, their stats leave some things to be desired, ESPECIALLY LP.

Guhvorn is definitely the most threatening of the brains. It has the highest attack out of them and it knows how to USE that. Guhweep is a healer, but that’s pretty much its only gimmick. And Guhlith is certainly there!

Although not terribly threatening in isolation, these brains together are a very difficult fight to get through. I’ve never managed it deathless, but I’m hoping my team lineup will pull through this time. I’m bringing Garret as our heavy hitter--he’s reliable, he has Harden, and he’s also our starter. We can’t just leave him behind! Scale is here for his support effect, and Star is here to attempt knocking opponents into the SZ if we end up needing it. In hindsight, I probably should have brought Ducky instead, but this team should work out fine regardless.

Oh, of COURSE Guhvorn is targeting Scale. Why not.

No knockback, darn. Harden may be the only thing that keeps Scale alive--I’m not sure. I am glad I brought Garret with us for that reason alone.

Harden is good. 11 damage with it up, 30 without it.

But getting Guhvorn down as quickly as possible is the easiest way to ensure that everybody lives. Ideally, it will be the first brain we KO.

On one hand, that was incredibly rude of you. On the other, you just wasted 180 FP and I don’t actually HAVE to attack Guhvorn.

I fully expect this to miss, but I have a funny strategy in mind for later that involves Benji having little to no FP.
