Wow, it’s only been like two weeks since last time! Also, although I don’t believe it affected this thread (aside from maybe @Bowser's Family Vacation 's comment), the site crash may have eaten a comment or two. If it was one of yours, I’m very sorry that I wasn’t able to reply to it :(

Last time, many bad things happened and they made Benji very sad. This time, he needs a fifth team member for Level-Up Battles.
Honoring our fallen gal… :( We can’t dwell on that, though; Benji has fossils to clean.
While doing that, Benji accidentally stumbled into another tutorial. Sigh.
That’s right! If we clean fossils and they don’t get integrated, they are instead donated to the Fossil Center. The rewards we can get from this are… interesting! Let’s have a look.
Stego is an Air Vivosaur, F-Raptor is Earth, Ptera is Air, and Compso is Earth. Not sure why none of them are Fire or Water Vivosaurs, but oh well! There isn’t anything too notable about any of them, and as you can see from the DP counts, getting all of their fossils is kind of a massive grind. I’ll do it if I’m desperate, but I don’t think this run will come to that.
Went back to Woolbeard’s Ship and FINALLY got Krona’s head! That took way longer than it should have. Don’t look at the point amount, it's embarrassing.
It’s Krona! Krona is an absolutely fantastic Vivosaur to have around. It’s strong, it can attack from the SZ without a damage debuff, and it’s reasonably bulky. The only drawback is that all of its moves are rather expensive. Coupling this fellow with Ducky, whose attacks are also costly, will be a bit risky. Benji will have to be more careful about spending FP.
I’ve had an idea for this guy’s name since I got the first fossil for him. He will be… Luke. And if you understand that reference, I apologize.
Luke’s now on the team! He’ll catch up to the others before too long.
The one place we didn’t go back to during this chapter was Rivet Ravine, so I made sure to pick up Ducky’s legs for them. Counter Blow is an interesting attack that will deal as much damage to the opponent as they deal to you. It’s situationally useful, but I don’t think I’ll do much with it.
Now that Ducky’s got legs, there’s no reason to put off the Level-Up Battle any longer.
The cleaning tests are getting more difficult, slowly but surely. I’m pretty confident in this one, though.
Yeah, that went about as expected.
Two preliminaries this time! Hopefully neither of them are too threatening; if someone dies, I’ll have to grab a replacement team member quickly.

Two Water Types and an Air Type? That’s possibly the least threatening type combo for this team to be up against!

Battle montage because, quite frankly, after a full-power critical hit does 27 damage, I am not that scared anymore.
Onyx has the POTENTIAL to be scary, but, well…

I like the Enflame symbol, it’s neat. And blue, since it’s a positive status condition. Now, Ducky! Attack!
Haha oneshot. Good job, Ducky!
Garret got a rank out of that fight, wonderful! On to the next one.
This is a slightly trickier team to counter. It should be okay, though.
In Fossil Fighters, Critical Hits are either the most devastating thing you can imagine or little more than a slightly larger scratch.
Goyo is probably the least threatening of this game’s trio of Pachy-lookalikes.

… Wait, if Nick has an M-Raptor, that means he’s been to the pirate ship. Which means it is not entirely unlikely that he was lying about where he found the beard ribbon and he actually stole it from Woolbeard’s ship. And that means… he’s the (indirect) reason that Firework and Fluffy got killed! Even more so than he was before!
LET’S GO TEAM. KICK HIS BUTT
Nick’s gimmick is using Team Skills. This could be very bad for us, since if we let him continue for long enough, he could theoretically off Benji’s entire team in one turn. Just need to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Incidentally, the unlock method he’s abusing here is the same-type one.

I don’t recall if defeating one Vivosaur prevents you from using the Team Skills of the other two. It does in either FF or Champions, I just don’t remember which one. Guess we’re about to find out!
That first attack HURT. That second attack… it sure made an attempt to hurt.
Ducky is scared! This means that they won’t be able to use a random selection of attacks. There’s a more intense version of the scared condition that locks you out of more attacks.
Luckily, Fist Jab is still usable.
Syracto got swapped to the EZ at the end of the last turn, so M-Raptor goes down first. Swapping to Garret just in case it lands another crit.

Star and Luke both got ranks despite not doing anything! Good for them.

Saltmander are known for their berserk fighting style. They do well in the heat, and produce huge quantities of salt when bothered by something.
I have to say, I really love the blue-colored designs. Something about the patterns and colors used enhances their overall design. Like, Jiango, Onyx, the blue Pachy and the blue Triceratops all look amazing to me, even more so than the others.

And we’re back! So soon, too! This next section of the game will be a lil different, since I actually haven’t finished the chapter’s gameplay yet! It’s a long one and I wanted to split up my play sessions a bit more. This means I’m (almost) as in the dark about future deaths as all of you! Very, uh, fun.

These fossils cannot be x-rayed, so you have to clean them entirely to determine what they are. That’s a lot of work for a bonus I really don’t need, so I’m not going to bother. The upgrade is entirely optional, too, so Benji won’t be penalized.
Let’s just head off to Mt. Lavaflow, sounds like it’ll be crawling with fire types! Maybe we’ll get Star a friend--

And, well, the chapter is also titled “BB Boss Revealed!” so I’m definitely using context clues to my advantage here.
Well that’s an invitation to bring them to the Park Area Dock if I ever did see one.
This line is going to be very funny in a few screens.
Before then, let’s finally take a look at Umbrella! As you can see, he’s already pretty high rank, so he’ll make a great backup Vivosaur. Luke is the better water type for now, I think. I prefer the raw strength he’s got.
Speaking of backups, let’s grab a Mt. Lavaflow catch before proceeding with the plot. I’m sure that won’t be an issue at all--
Oh. There’s a giant rock right at the entrance. Aaand there are no fossils before the big rock. Nice.
(I think that you CAN get fossils at this point if your sonar is upgraded to never find trash, but Benji’s isn’t and I don’t have the cash for that right now)

If you hadn’t noticed, that message is the game’s way of warning you to be prepared. It actually hasn’t come up much before this point, which is rather odd.
I’d suspect that’s because this is the first place in the game where you can be chased. Like in Pokemon, if a trainer makes eye contact with you, it’s time to battle! Unlike in Pokemon, you can run from the battle summons. Benji was TRYING to get his second catch but I’ll just save that until they’re all cleared out.

See that yellow-orange glow coming off Zino? That’s Parting Blow, which drastically increases attack. Good thing Zino can’t hit for beans.
Unfortunately, Megath can. And EXTRA unfortunately, Luke knows Law of the Jungle, which could seeeriously screw us over if he decides to use it (Which I have seen the AI do. Law of the Jungle drops one of your Vivosaurs to 1 LP and fully heals the user. It’s not great in a Nuzlocke!)
Luckily, Luke just opted for another cronch monch.

It was! It's good in Champions, too, once you hit max rank (I run one on my VS Zongazonga endgame grinding team). Its frailty combined with its sheer expense makes it... difficult to use in this run. It's definitely the one I'd go for if I had to, though.
Yess, they're so wonderful! I honestly adore all of the textures in this game aside from maaaybe two (Because Champions totally revamped them), but the blues are especially good. I dig the purple Vivosaurs as well, though they're a touch less common.
Nick Nack is the WORST, he is responsible for most of Benji's bad time. At least he was able to get some revenge!

HYPSI AND DILOPHO MY FREAKING BELOVEDS
If I’m remembering where Hypsi is from correctly, this gives some interesting implications about the BB Bandits. That’s spoilers though.
Each of these BB Bandits has a theme their team is focused around, if you hadn’t noticed: Rex’s was gimmick Vivosaurs, Snivel’s is Team Skills, and here, Vivian’s is support. Hypsi has some of the best support effects in the entire game! Not that it’ll matter much, as they’re easily countered.
As much as I love them, Dilopho isn’t a threat.
And neither are these two honestly.
It definitely helps that Garret is a bulky boy. I love him.

Huh, we’re actually steadily getting closer to the end of the plot. Still a few more chapters to go, but it’s just about endgame. Speaking of: Is there any interest in me doing the postgame plot and battles? There are a couple boss battles and a few new locations to explore in it. Nothing too substantial, but it’s some fun stuff that I haven’t done in ages.
Confusion is just so incredibly irritating in Fossil Fighters, I despite it.

After beating Bullwort, the game leaves Benji at the BB Base. Find your own way home, I guess. Benji needs to do some digging around here anyways, though, so it isn’t a huge loss.
Umbrella officially joins the team! He’s going to do just fine, though I hope he gets a rank or two before fighting the Level Master…
This blue fossil is the one I marked as my next catch. I believe the others are from outside/I didn’t fully clear my case before coming here. As a reminder, our first catch is that Earth-type fossil. Let’s get them clean!

Ooooh, Benji’s second catch is Dilopho! We saw Vivian using one earlier. Dilopho has FP Plus, which is pretty nice, and some good support effects! It’s pretty frail, though.
Now that we’ve taken out the BB Bandits, their boat just… chills in the Park Area. We’re able to return to the BB Base whenever we’d like now.
Interestingly, a small ocean-passing cutscene--normally only visible on your first visit to a dig site--will always play when traveling to the BB Base. I’m not sure why this is, to be honest.
There are no fossils in Bullwort’s room, but there is some… interesting decor. Sir, who is your interior designer, I just want to talk.
And now… this part. BB Base has two water types and a few earth types. Somehow, I managed to pull the least common of both. Finding head fossils is going to be… tedious.
(There is a small advantage to waiting on getting Fossil Chips, and it’s this; if you’re on the hunt for specific Vivosaurs or you just want to revive them quickly, it’s much easier to find head fossils when arms and legs aren’t available. I’ve considered using this strategy while completing my Fossilary in Champions, but I ultimately never had to employ it.)

Not pictured: Like seven of that same Earth Fossil, which is a long tail that Brachiosaurs have as their legs. Pelto is not a Brachiosaur.
The Fossil Fighters Wiki lists Saichan, the only fire type in BB Base, as a rare encounter. This means that Benji got one of the rarest fossils in the area before getting a Pelto or a Dilopho head. I seethe.
Eventually, I got tired of digging up rocks. I had no idea this sign had flavor text associated with it, wow.
Benji’s sonar has a new look! Now, when fossils are right in front of him, the red light in the bottom-left corner flashes, and a beeping is here. This is pretty handy, though it’s easy to go without.
Oh boy, three more Salto tails… what is this, animal crossing?
Not what I need but also not a Salto tail, so at least we’re making progress.
(New challenge: try to drop the red bar as far down as possible. Once it passes 50 you can’t do any more moves, so there’s actually some strategy here)

Here she is! Dilopho is one of several frail status Vivosaurs. I don’t want to use her for that reason; one hit could easily kill.

Not pictured: Like seven of that same Earth Fossil, which is a long tail that Brachiosaurs have as their legs. Pelto is not a Brachiosaur.
The Fossil Fighters Wiki lists Saichan, the only fire type in BB Base, as a rare encounter. This means that Benji got one of the rarest fossils in the area before getting a Pelto or a Dilopho head. I seethe.
Eventually, I got tired of digging up rocks. I had no idea this sign had flavor text associated with it, wow.
Benji’s sonar has a new look! Now, when fossils are right in front of him, the red light in the bottom-left corner flashes, and a beeping is here. This is pretty handy, though it’s easy to go without.
Oh boy, three more Salto tails… what is this, animal crossing?
Not what I need but also not a Salto tail, so at least we’re making progress.
(New challenge: try to drop the red bar as far down as possible. Once it passes 50 you can’t do any more moves, so there’s actually some strategy here)

Aww yeah, it’s Amargo! One of the Toe Bean’d Brachiosaurs, Armargo is a very solid choice! I may consider using her over Tox once he hits max rank. For now, her name shall be Danielle and she shall hang out in the VMM.
The other fossil I was able to grab was her body, handily!

Woah, a gimmick! The game doesn’t give you a counter for turns that you have left; we’ll have to keep track of that ourselves. I don’t think that Benji’s ever been in a battle for 12 turns, though, so I don’t think it’ll be an issue.

Naturally, Diggins is using Stego, his favorite Vivosaur. He’s also got Shuno and Dilopho, who are both very capable and also pretty high ranked for this point in the game!
This is the team I’ll be using. I’m not sure how well Umbrella will fare, but I need him to take out Shuno. I’m not worried about Ducky, they’re bulky.

I can only assume the AI targets the Vivosaur with the least HP by default, but it’s a very strange system.

If you theoretically couldn't beat the Fossil Battle in the allotted number of turns, would it count as a wipe? 🤔 12 turns seems quite lenient, but something tells me this added bit of challenge is here to stay for these high-rank Level-Up Battles.
