Pachy hits hard, it has cheap attacks, and it gets a LOT of crits. Doesn't help that the majority of your early stuff is weak to it--it becomes less threatening lategame because you probably aren't running a lot of air vivosaurs.

I am fairly sure you can't start the battle without V Raptor? Though admittedly I don't remember ever trying it.

Fluffy is a PERFECT SOUL and yeah confusion is going to be scary. For the most part, Vivosaurs won't attack their teammates. They tend to do nothing or switch.

Welcome back! Last time, Benji beat up some criminals. Today, Firework is getting a tribute, as she rightfully deserves.

We aren’t doing the level up battles just yet, by the way. As you may recall, we got a not-U-Raptor that I need to get cleaned. Also, look at all of those red fossils. They’re ALL U-RAPTOR. I’m seething.

What’s it gonna be, what’s it gonna be?

It’s Ourano! Can’t say I’ve ever really used one, as its attacks are very costly (especially for this point in the game). At the moment, Gray is a much better Earth Type, so this Ourano is going to be benched. They also don’t have a name yet, so I would love some suggestions.

I could’ve grabbed more fossils for our new friend, but nah, it’s plot time. Benji needs to rank up so that he can go swimming!

Speeding through the cleaning test, since we’ve seen it all before. The battles are a lot more exciting, anyways. None of my Vivosaurs can die while I’m cleaning rocks.

Ooooooh, the battle test is getting spicy! Now it’s two plot-mandated battles instead of just one. To my knowledge, most of the ‘regular’ fighters you go against in level-up battles have SOME plot significance. Off the top of my head, I can only bring one exception to mind. That means this first fight will be against a familiar face! Place your bets now.

Holt sure has been practicing; his Vivosaurs are a bit stronger than they were last time! I can’t believe he doesn’t carry a V-Raptor, though. What a liar.

Finally able to switch to Firework and get the kill! Whew, that was close for a second there. The bad news is that Holt is ABSOLUTELY going to switch to his Tricera and try to kill Firework.

It’s McJunker! Wow, who would have ever seen this coming. His team scares me quite a bit, so Benji will have to be careful.

This SHOULDN’T be that threatening, but Stygi hits hard and I can’t bring Fluffy along because of Cerato and Kento. We’re a bit stuck, then.

Okay, so he just did chip the first turn. We can manage this.

No poison, also could he maybe not get crits? Thank you.

FINALLY! And he switched, which means that he won’t be able to again for a few turns. Gray is safe from Stygi, for now. Plus, we can try...

Yesssss, just like that! But sheesh, Gray is really getting hurt by all the chip attacks being thrown her way… and I don’t want Stygi to be forced in front when Kentro perishes…

Gray would live… one more hit from Cerato. But definitely not from Stygi, and I’m not sure about Kentro… this needs to be settled quick.

McJunker's AI seems to favor targeting the support zones to try and remove the buffs/debuffs they give to attack zone Vivosaurs, though I've never fully tested it so I can't say before. I hate it, though.

It’s time for a new chapter! Part of the reason this update took SO LONG is because I usually do gameplay chapter-by-chapter, and this one has a looot of stuff going on. As in, “the number of screenshots I have for this chapter is comparable to the number of screenshots I had in every part before combined.” Lots of fun stuff! Before we go to the dig site…

… we’ve got a tacky idol to place. Looks like the shelf has room for one more!

And NOW it’s dig site time.

DIGGINS I SAID IT’S DIG SITE TIME. We can’t use the Fossil Cannon, not because I’m playing this game on an emulator illegally, but rather because I have no friends to do co-op with. Moving on.

Before we head out, I officially put Ducky on the team! Yeah, I’m going with Ducky, it’s a wonderful name. They’re here to fill the hole that Grey left, but they have some catching up to do. That means that, instead of heading to Bottomsup Bay, Benji needs to go to Rivet Ravine.

Alright, got the fossil Ducky needed! Well, one of them. Still gotta find their body…

Oh of COURSE now all I can find are U-Raptor fossils. And Benji can’t even hide behind this post properly; the part is off to a poor start.

Eventually…

THERE we go. Ducky’s still behind on ranks (They haven’t battled yet, so I’m not surprised) but this is better than nothing!

Benji gets a fancy mask! He’s going to need it.

Wait Beth no tell me more about the Denture Sharks I am BEGGING you. Where do they get the false teeth?? Why are fighters allowed near them? Is Richmond’s game to hope that everyone gets eaten so he can collect life insurance or something????

I love this game so much. So many questions I would have never otherwise considered.

Do you see where your scam has gotten you, Richmond? Your own granddaughter is going to get eaten now! Oh no this was the culmination of his insurance fraud wasn’t it?

… oh, wait, I guess Benji can just rescue her. That would work.

These sharks all have a certain range they’re programmed to stay in. That means in this screenshot Benji is TOTALLY SAFE AND HE DEFINITELY DIDN’T GET HIT (getting hit just means you have to start over. The game devs didn’t want to add death by shark to their game about fossils but they’re pokemon, I guess. Cowards.)

The Denture Sharks are gone! For now, anyways. Let’s go find a pirate ship, that sounds like WAY more fun. But how will we ever find the ship if nobody else has?

(Oh, remember the fact that nobody has found this ship before. It will be relevant.)

That’s right, the passage is hidden under a rock! Now I’ll just have to break ALL OF THE ROCKS.

Money rock, nothing to see here rock, Jewel Rock… wait, that’s the wrong kind of rock.

I love the commentators so much. This battle was uneventful otherwise, don’t worry about Garret, he’s fine.

Finally, our first catch of the area! That’s right, I said first. There are actually three sections of this Dig Site! This underwater portion, the underwater ‘caves’, and the pirate ship (Spoilers I guess: There’s a pirate ship). Both underwater parts have the same fossils, but I’ll be getting an encounter in each because I feel like it. Try to stop me.

First underwater cave! This isn’t the one where the ship is, but it IS the one where we’ll be getting our second encounter of the day.

M-RAPTOR MY BELOVED……….

Just like U-Raptor, M-Raptor has FEATHERS. I love Her.

Ducky’s been doing great in battle, by the way! They’re a lot different than our previous Earth Type, but I like them well enough.

Okay, so this is going to get a little messy. You see, all of the fossils in Bottomsup Bay proper are water types. This means that, unlike the last area, I’m going to have to clean basically every fossil. And unlike the FIRST area, which was the same way, I don’t have all the fossils memorized. I don’t know which ones to clean and which ones to skip, so this will be tedious.

WAIT MY ENCOUNTER WAS ELASMO??????? See this is what I mean by it getting messy. I thought my encounter was Plesio, aka Worse Elasmo. I very much prefer this turn of events! Though it does mean that I may have missed Elasmo’s revival screenshot, as I seem to remember skipping it.

That aside, let’s see what Benji discovered in the cave.

Yesss I love Krona! It’s one of the rarer Vivosaurs of this section but it’s super strong! Can’t wait to find the head.

Only one other fossil of note from that batch. Time to go back for more!

Onyx is another Vivosaur native to Bottomsup Bay. While cool, it’s also the only water type on Woolbeard’s ship, so I am desperately hoping we don’t get it.

Remember how I said nobody had found Woolbeard’s ship before? Yeah that clearly wasn’t true, ROSIE.

Two more Vivosaurs native to the bay! Shoni is very fun in the lategame and not very fun elsewhere. Elasmo is what Benji will have once I find the dang head! I haven’t used one in Fossil Fighters (I’ve run one in Champions to mild success).

Elasmo can inflict the interesting status condition of enraged! I’m still not entirely sure what, exactly, it does, but it definitely lowers accuracy. I think that it also increases crit rate?

OKAY SO between getting and cleaning these rocks was, like, a week-long break. That’s when I forgot that Elasmo was my encounter, so I distinctly remember being annoyed by getting a rare head fossil. Now, though, I couldn't be happier!

… I did miss the screenshot of him being revived, though. Remember that enemy one from earlier? Imagine that but way stronger, and somebody remind me to grab screenshots for next chapter (If I got screenshots now it would be spoilers). His name is Umbrella.

Got another Krona piece, too! That was a pretty good digging session. Along the way, I’ve also been getting loads of Jewel Rocks. I’m fairly certain that we’ll have enough for the final radar upgrade we need soon!

Another hidden passage, and it’s the good one! That’s a pirate ship, so now it is TIME… to enter.

Just like your ears and nose, a pirate ship has a curious property that allows it to remain unflooded despite having been under the sea for who knows how long.

I swear, Garret almost dies at literally every opportunity presented to him…

(He was fine, don’t worry. The answer to “Where’s Fluffy?” is “I honestly have no idea”)

This Pirate Ship is BIG, and it’s very easy to get lost in. Good news is Benji grabbed a catch! And IT’S M-RAPTOR MY BELOVED…….!

Dead ends all around, but at least there’s a treasure chest! That Jewel Rock will be important.

More treasure chests! Benji is absolutely loaded with Jewel Rocks, so it’s high time to skedaddle.

I’m magic and I knew this was M-Ratpor before! It’s a fun Vivosaur and I’d love to use it, but Garret and Tox have my air coverage down for the moment.

Time for the second fossil chip! Remember how the last fossil chip let Benji upgrade all of his Vivosaurs and made them unstoppable for a hot minute? Yeah, that’s about to happen AGAIN.

Also grabbed some case upgrades! Next time, there will be more pirate ship shenanigans and also a scramble to pick up new rocks for all of our team members!

Maybe the denture sharks will be repelled by the anglerfish head! That way, they can't see Benji's teeth (false or otherwise)! 🦷

I like that Fossil Fighters acknowledges that sharks are not usually man-eaters. Denture sharks are just weird.

Uhhh anyways, I happen to remember that the back half of this chapter involves backtracking, so we’re going to explore the pirate ship a little bit more.

Aaand for our trouble, we’ve unlocked Team Skills! I’ll let Holt handle the explanation on this one.

(He just loves a good tutorial, what can I say)

Okay, so, rundown on team skills: They’re expensive, but they fill the unique niche of hitting every one of your opponent’s Vivosaurs. Some of them are better than others (Particularly, there are a handful that can inflict status). Holt is half correct on what Vivosaurs can use them, though the diet restriction must be REALLY picky, as I’ve never had a team that was able to use team skills based on that. Elemental type is the easiest way to get team skills, but since I crave team diversity we will probably never be using them.

(I don’t remember if it’s a thing in FF or not, but in the sequel, you can also make team skills based on Vivosaurs from the same geological era! It’s a neat detail)

A door! And further proof that there is no way we’re the first ones here, pfft. Or maybe the VMMs can move themselves around, I guess I don’t know. Maybe it’s just that nobody managed to get this door open? It probably has a secret code you have to enter or--

I don’t think I’ve mentioned it so far, but Rosie has been tagging along everywhere. I imagine her getting more and more confused by Benji’s desire to do everything but advance the plot. Good stuff, but I think we’ve had enough.

I wonder why it wasn’t left with Woolbeard’s body? It’s a silly question, but now I’m asking it.

If I'm remembering correctly, I didn't know about the Fossil Chips in my first playthrough and I got through just fine. I believe the final boss caps out at Rank 8? With a bit of luck, that's feasible to beat with Rank 5/6 Vivosaurs.
