It's not only lacking a Flamethrower TM - it's that Fire is pretty weak in gen 1. Lots of Geodudes to ruin your day, lots of Water types to ruin your day, Steel doesn't exist yet, Fire doesn't even resist Ice yet (leaving Charizard to be weak to Ice), Ice types are nearly all Water anyway, most Fire types will only have Ember around Erika so she's not as free as you'd expect, Grass and Bug are both covered by Flying so it's less necessary, there's so many issues. Charizard in particular is just way better in the remakes as a whole, while Venusaur is worse. Venusaur benefits a lot from gen 1's weird mechanics which are lost in FRLG.

Ninetales is actually still good though. Learns Dig, Flamethrower at level 35 as Vulpix and Ninetales has more offensive power pre-gen 2 Special Attack nerf.

venusaur had that sick leech seed + toxic combo that was broke as hell in gen 1

sidenote, i love gen 1 funk. i love how WEIRD the game mechanics were and how stupid easy it is to break. buffing your stats so much it loops over and puts you into the negatives? absolutely wild.

Chikorita is NOT a bad starter. In fact, it is one of my favourite pokemon of all time and fell in love with it from the moment I started playing gen 2. Sure, it's weak against the first 2 gyms, but so was Charmander.
I taught my Meganium in HG Return, Petal Dance, Earthquake and can't remember the last move, and always made sure it held a Persim Berry. Never had any problems with it.

Lazy so I'll just give starter takes

Bulbasaur > Squirtle > Charmander
Cyndaquil > Totodile > Chikorita (the closest of all these trios tbh)
Marshtomp > Torchic > Treecko > Mudkip
Turtwig > Piplup > Chimchar
Dewott > Snivy > Tepig > Oshawott
Chespin > Froakie > Fennekin
Torracat > Popplio > Rowlett > Litten
Grookey > Scorbunny > Sobble

I... really didn't like ORAS' soundtrack. Some of the remasters were alright, the others were.... left to be desired. Maybe I'm a purist for the GBA soundchip, but that brought Hoenn to life more than the 3DS' did.

While the writing for the best wishes series was generally shit, it still had some really cool shit in it that I wish would come back. I really liked Team Rocket being competent, and the new animation for Iron Tail where Pikachu's tail actually turns metal instead of just glowing was fucking awesome.

While I'm not a big fan of Triple Battles, Rotation Battles are one of my favourite battle styles, to the point where I wish it would be brought back, either in Gen 8 or the inevitable Gen 9.

this ghost tries to be cool and kinda angsty, but ends up keysmashing about cute things anyway. they may project a bit too much onto their writing.
On the subject of battles, I prefer Doubles to Singles now and wish the main-series game would include more of them (though I heard they did have a Double Battle in Sw/Sh which sounds awesome xD). There seem to be so many neat shenanigans that you can get up to in Double Battles with moves like Helping Hand, Ally Switch and healing or boosting your ally. There are some Pokemon like Audino which could have some more in-game viability as a result of being able to learn these moves. It would be really interesting to see what tricks the player could get up to xD

I would love GF to actualy study their battle system. Mechanics in Pokemon battles really could allow to build some interesting, deep and varied fights yet for some reasons we are getting either the same repeated strategies over and over again or mish-mash of moves and abilitites that has no synergy or any strategy behind them.

Lack of Grass-type leader that use *Rain* instead of usual sun seems like missed opportunity. Between Rain's anti-Fire effect, Weather Ball and Lombre/Ludicolo (depends on how late we put them) for ace it seems that there's alot of synergy between rain and grass-types that just never was used for anything.

Adept at procrastination. If he ever seems productive, it's likely because he's ignoring something far more important.
^ That probably won't happen just because they tend to favour using new mons as aces rather than old ones. So unless we get a new Grass/Water type (or the Ludicolo line gets something new like a Mega or G-max form to make it relevant to the new gen), then I can't see that being likely.

This Pokémon has too many ideas for their own good.
I think it would be neat to see more teams in the main games revolving around weather/terrain effects. Having each gym leader specialize in one would be rather unique, and I think we have enough that that’d actually be possible, even if it’s hard to build strategies around some of them.

^^^ Hard agree with the takes above. Gen 8's final Gym battle was my absolute favourite. Even just adding a simple trait to the battle like weather strategies made you have to consider which mons you used a little bit more, rather than just picking a strong Pokemon with a type advantage and mashing A. I'd love for more Gyms to introduce more gimmicks or themes like that. Even if the gimmicks aren't super difficult to defeat, it adds more flavour to the battle and makes it more memorable/fun to play.

That was more of an example based on already existing Pokemon, obviously they will want to favor new Pokemon :V I just wanted to show example of completely unused synergy between moves and abilities that could be exploited to create actually unique and fun fight for grass specialist, rather than HAHAHA POWDER MOVES GO PRZSLPPSN or another sun abuser. There's more unused synergies and ignored strategies and it's quite sad that Gamefreak refuse to be more creative with fights, or just don't understand their battle system.

Also while fight against Raihan indeed is one of the most creative fights in last few gens we got, he actualy lacks in other places. There's alot of questionable move and abilities choices that are blatantly dumb.

So yeah, my unpopular opinion is that Gamefreak clearly does not understand battle system they work with and because of this sticks to reusing the same strategies in different packages and/or is doing very obvious errors in boss battle contruction.

A Pokémon shrouded in hearsay and urban legend, spoken of only in whispered tales and hushed gossip.
@MixnMatch It's not that that GF doesn't understand their battle system, its that the difficulty is too low. Theres lots of little unusual, themed, or synergized sets/teams through out the series, but you often don't notice because you're too busy HULK SMASHING your way through them before they can do their thing. The A.I. cant often pull them off because they need to be easy enough for a casual player to beat.

Battle facilities often have examples, such as Gen 3 having Gyrados paired with Lightning Rod Rhydon or a Dusknoir set in Gen 4 centered on Iron Ball or a Camouflage abuse Starmie in 6. But theres other examples like Tierno's dance team or N's seasonal weather teams or FRLG Blue's sun abuse Venusaur. Or Totem Pokemon in general. Just look up their sets and the sets of their allies.

We'd need harder difficulties for these strats to shine rather than going unnoticed under the weight of a player OHKOing with SE moves all the time.

Not sure if this is unpopular or not, but I'd be willing to wait several years for a pokemon game to come out with nothing in the interim if it meant a. the national dex was in the game b. the generation of pokemon was roughly the same size as pre-gen 6 generations (the ideal is gen 5 obviously) and c. it was polished without any crunch or overworking.

Heck with it, I'd wait several years for a game with ONLY c. Granted, I'd still be miffed if it took several years and there was still no national dex, but ultimately what I'm most concerned about is 1. the game is a good game, and 2. the makers aren't killing themselves to make it that way.

Um, not in that order.

I see it more as a common sense than unpopular opinion but then, common sense is not always that common... sadly.
Currently the yearly releases that TPCi is pushing for are killing Gamefreak and killing any chances for quality Pokemon games. Say what you want, but SwSh is really not a game worth its price, especially in comparison to earlier releases that were offering just way more for fraction of its price...

This Skarmory/Charizard fusion is very rare and tends to be quiet and shy until befriended. Also a huge fan of Smash Bros. and writing.
Starter takes:
Charmander > Squirtle >>>> Bulbasaur (I just think it's boring by comparison)
Cyndaquil = Totodile >>>> *insert 1000 >s* Chikorita
Treecko >>>>>>>>> Torchic >>>>>>>>>> a pile of dirt >>>>>>>>>>> Mudkip
Turtwig = Chimchar = Piplup (honestly all three are pretty solid)
Snivy = Tepig = Oshawott (again, all pretty solid)
Froakie > Fennekin > Chespin (really they're all fine, but Braixen and Quilladin are so awkward)
Litten > Rowlet >>>>>>>>> Popplio (more so its evos-Popplio itself isn't bad, but the evos ruin it)
And as of right now, Sobble > Scorbunny > Grookey (they're all pretty solid tbh, I just used Sobble first)
