Yeah, add me to the list of wanting older characters. I really loved how in Black and White the series attempted (not always well, but still) to mature with it's audience - in the same gen as Vanilluxe, no less. Even then those sorts of Pokemon were played completely earnestly and not memed like how they try to make Wooloo a thing in all the social media (it's not a thing). Then they completely threw it all away in later gens, bar some real shit in Sea Mauville in ORAS and some of the stuff in Alola. Having slightly older player characters, if not older, was a good change in gen 5.

I'm pretty sure it was the fans that made Wooloo a thing in social media, not Game Freak themselves. (Also, PETA kind of helped by making their infamous "I am not your Wooloo sweater' post, which got memed to hell and back.)

A Pokémon shrouded in hearsay and urban legend, spoken of only in whispered tales and hushed gossip.
I'm definitely in camp older protag as well. Some games definitely have 'em. Like, X/Y are definitely older teens at the youngest. Easy way to tell is to compare game Serena's physique in official artwork to anime Serena's. It's pretty clear game Serena is older.

Not to mention, in B/W2, you can start dating a news anchor (Yancy or Curtis, depending on player gender). I can't see a kid being a news anchor and Nintendo isn't the type to let adults date children, so... I guess we can pull anime logic and place Yancy/Curtis 17-20ish (which seems realistically too young for such a job, but anime logic), and the B/W2 protag around the same age. Or Yancy/Curtis are a few years older, maybe mid-twenties, instead.

I mean, the point I was trying to make was that the character dynamics would change completely if the player character was the only one that could have their age customised. I was definitely a fan of the deliberately older player characters in Black/White and I'm not sure why they reverted so hard with Sun/Moon... But if you could change your character's age too much, then they'll need to adapt at least your rival to match (and probably a bunch of the rest of the dialogue in the game, too), otherwise the dynamic is just weird.

That said, it could make a nice story, if done right... But as a comic or fanfic or something, rather than as the story of a game with a silent protagonist.

Also, yes. Wooloo was a thing long before Pokemon's social media started using it!

Haha, yeah, Alola is written with the express idea that you are a 11 year old kid new to the region, for an older character, you would have to have characters and writing that specifically recognizes that and I don't think Pokemon as a whole would be willing to allow an age slider, or at least not in a way that would force for multiple scripts to account for that change, as much as I would personally prefer an older protagonist. I think they would have to make characters like they did in black and white, not necessarily daddy and mommy age, but characters that can deal with more mature themes and topics while still having fun.

Or at least have a Pokemon game that doesn't leash you so harshly.

As you've mentioned, Alola def was a reversion of that, and very much put you on training wheels most of the game when in earlier pokemon titles, it wasn't imposed upon you so harshly. Gen 8 is a VERY strong example of how being a child is now a huge detriment to the enjoyment of the game as Leon does pretty much everything plot relevant for you and off screen while you're told by all the adult characters to stay out of it. It felt like there was little reason to present us with the whole Dynamax Pokemon going on a rampage only to have Leon take care of it. At this point, the game is really talking down to you as a player, no matter your actual age and I miss the games treating players with a bit more dignity by the series in a less invasive manner, rather than Hop, and even Leon DURING the championship match, complimenting on your usage of type match ups.

I agree that the plot of SwSh would have been greatly improved if we'd gotten the chance to actually fight some of those Dynamaxed Pokemon that were rampaging around. It's possible that originally the player was going to be more involved in the plot, but since the game was rushed out the door because YEarLY RELeaSES, the whole Eternatus plot suffered immensely.

I felt very strongly that there was cut content there and that we were supposed to originally help out with that whole thing considering the rather.... abrupt nature of it happening and being resolved JUST as quickly by Leon and summarized in an article that just.... feels a bit out of place.

I've a bit of a theory that the post game content was originally supposed to be more incorporated during the mainline game and just got shoved into the bonus story. The only thing that makes me think that is because you do the tasks that might have been expected of during that whole Dynamax Pokemon event, plus it would have been nice to have a more substantial bad guy team presence and I think the over the top performances from Sordward and Shielbert could have added some fun and levity that Team Yell didn't quite hit the mark with.

I haven't gotten to the postgame yet because I haven't beaten Leon yet. I need to get myself a high-leveled Rock-type or something from the Wild Area so I can take out his freaking Charizard.

This Skarmory/Charizard fusion is very rare and tends to be quiet and shy until befriended. Also a huge fan of Smash Bros. and writing.
I definitely would like older protagonists as well. I've always had a problem with the idea of a 10-year-old going out on their own in a world full of dangerous beasts, so making them older feels a lot more realistic/sensible.

I kinda think the game would be worse if they'd incorporated team up Dynamax battles as part of the main game's story, personally. Would detract from the uniqueness of the Eternatus part, which was honestly really awesome. I think if they'd just had a decent cutscene in that part instead of literally a still image (which didn't even look that great, honestly), then that one part wouldn't have felt so off.

But I tend to think that most of the areas in Swish's main game that people claim are blatant signs of cut content are more easily explained by just being a poorly executed story.

I believe that in the Sinnoh remakes the Great Marsh should return but have Go/Let's Go style catching mechanics. Maybe expand the selection of Pokémon as well. The other areas should have the old catching mechanics of course.

I wholeheartedly agree, but the motion controls should be fixed/improved upon. I never played the game outside of handheld mode, but I hear that the Poke Ball 'throwing' mechanic didn't always work properly.

This might be unpopular because I know the protagonists in pokemon are meant to be 'you', even more so with the advent of customisation...but in recent gens I wish they were less blank slates than they are. Now hold on, I'm not advocating for a speaking protagonist with a preset name, gender and appearance! I would very much like them to remain voiceless and fully customisable. I just feel with Gens 7 and 8 it'd have been somewhat nicer if they'd had more of a connection to the world around them. For example SwSh's overarching theme of characters trying to figure out their lives in the shadow of older relatives (or relative-like figures in Bede's case) is undercut a bit by our protagonist being a blank nobody who's just kind of there. A bit more detail on the player's mother being a serious contender for the championship title back in the day would have been fine. We already had Norman in Gen 3 and Johanna to a lesser extent in Gen 4, so it's not like it's impossible for the series to expand on the parents...

It's not a dealbreaker for me by any means, just something I think would've been nicer.

Honestly, I don't know how unpopular this opinion will be, but I really wished the dialogue options in the games mattered more? I'm not asking for a complex story or anything, but it'd be nice if the choices for different dialogue replies had more value on the gameplay and how NPCs view the protagonist. Maybe it could help customize your blank slate trainer protagonist and help immerse players further into the game. This is something I personally enjoy in games, but I understand it might not be for everyone.

Frequently criticizes inane video game plots, especially those involving spiky haired boys and cats.
I’m surprised I haven’t come here yet with a hot take. I’ll leave a simple one.

Hugh is a bad character, and an even worse rival. He constantly steals the spotlight from the player in BW2 and his motivation is probably the weakest of any rival in the series and that’s saying a lot given X and Y’s rival group. His lines are incredulously narmy, his design oozes knock off Sasuke, and don’t get me started on Purrloin.

If you play BW2, Hugh’re gonna have a bad time.

Allllrighty I don't generally have legit unpopular opinions when it comes to pokemon unless you count "I don't care about NatDex shit" as one. But... one thing's kinda crystalized for me recently that prolly falls here, and I couldn't think of a much worse time to post this lmao:

1. I don't care about a Sinnoh remake. I don't! DP was a significant part of my childhood, and I have many vivid and wonderful memories of playing it on the bus years and years ago. Emerald was my first game, but DP was the first one I got to experience with others and really dug into (Y'know. Like Underground. Thank you). That said, it's all just shrug emoji to me. I'm sure it'll be fun and seeing Coronet in new graphics would be cool and all that. And that's one thing. But.

2. I legitimately get annoyed by the emphasis being put on remakes these days. Not by Game Freak, but by fans themselves. I get that it's partially nostalgia, but from many people I also see an undercurrent of "I don't trust them to make new games so just touch this one up and I'll be good" which I don't have time to unpack that one properly. It also never stops and it blows my mind to see people rooting for remake announcements like a month after the previous one? IMO it's just falling into the same backwards-looking sequel/remake culture that plagues media in general these days. I feel like we'll reach a point of diminishing returns pretty soon on the remake front, and it's energy/resources I would much much rather see them use on actual new games, new material, etc.

Also, if/when Sinnoh remake becomes a thing, there's going to be like a day of celebration and then it'll just be the Unova remake squad coming out of the woodwork, and I'm going to tear my hair out while shoving my head in the sand while wearing protective earwear because I straight-up just don't want to see that ham-fisted, creepy, weird plot and those god-awful Team Plasma unis again. But I suppose that's a different post.

I know people like to complain about the plot of SwSh but that encounter with Zacian/Zamezanta in the Slumbering Weald at the start of the game is a genuinely cool scene and was actually kind of ominous and spooky on the first playthrough when you don't know what's going to happen. I just wish the games had stayed at that level.

This Pokemon is not very good at nuzlockes and sucks at grinding and quits nuzlockes when grinding is very very bad.
I love Dedenne. It can be very useful in PU as a rare sweeper or a staller.

Gen IV, while it has the slowest engine, had the best multiplayer “metas”. OU, UU, and Ubers all felt like places that could be fun without needing to just STACK the deck with flavor of the Gen Pokemon (ubers tier you need Ubers, obviously, but sometimes OU or UU Pokémon were good partners, which you don’t see much anymore). There was definitely powercreep, don’t get me wrong, but base 120 attack was still excellent in these days, instead of just “pretty good”. TTar was god like in modern VGC, but it ran more sets than just “wanna see me Dynamax WP? Wanna see me do it again?”
