Thought this'd be a good thread for people to praise or complain about NPCs from the Pokemon games! Let us know if there any frustrating rivals, brilliant villains or lines from someone that just touched your heart ~

A fair few people know that N's my fave character in the entire series, but looking back on it now I feel like Bianca from BW deserves more love. She's got her own character arc, tries to deal with the inevitability of not being the best in a healthy and realistic way and learns to become self-reliant and figure out what she's really interested in. That moment where she travels back across the region to get nearly all of the Gym Leaders to come help you was such an epic moment in my eyes. We stan someone who changes her goals and is fine with it anyway 😊

Nanu is never leaving my top five list here. He's pretty much the most down to earth portrayal of a Dark-type specialist not because of aesthetic reasons but for being in line with his personality and outlook. I wish he got more of a spotlight due to his history and brief contribution to the plot, but it fits him perfectly that he keeps to the background. Oh, and he defied the Dark-type Elite Four tradition by noping out of the promotion and giving it to Acerola. What a guy!

Despite being a Grass-type, Casual is a flaming lesbian. Fire and Grass don't usually mix, but somehow it works out here.
Pokemon Ranger Mary, on Route 7 in Black and White, had a post-battle line that jumped out at me for whatever reason.

"First, we'll create our own style! Because I am hopeless at social niceties and fashions!"

Probably just because that second sentence resonates incredibly hard with me. Also probably because the very next battle I almost lost a mon.

This user's interests change more often than her pantalones. It is unlikely that she'll ever finish making a nuzlocke comic, but she can die trying!
Guzma is the absolute love of my life... I'd die for him. He's the only thing that made the Alola region worth exploring to me...

But fuck Lusamine, and that one lady in Snowpoint who trades you a Haunter holding an Everstone.

This is a declaration of war! I can't believe you would have such a wrong opinion! Shout out to Hau for being the most pure cinnamon roll of a rival there is!!!

It never quite knows what it's doing. Yet, somehow, things still get done.
The BW1 rivals are probably the most well-developed and rounded rivals of the series so far, IMO |D No rival has ever been especially in depth, but all three of them showed clear yet distinct motivations and growth through the game, and it was great seeing where they wound up.

The worst one, though? The one with the absolute least characterization, motivation, or endearing qualities? The entire gaggle of XY ‘rivals’ holy shit. Even Hau was at least a fun /character/. Wally had an impressive development. Blue and Silver showed true changes of heart down the line and gave you a sense of wanting to fight them. Even Hugh had a few nice moments & showed actual growth, but the Kalos 4??? They just.. stayed the same all the way through, and weren’t interesting fights either!

I don't outright despise the XY supporting cast but they were extremely barebones even by the game's borderline minimalist standards. They're so one-dimensional and inconsequential there is a number of scenes you can actually remove them from and it wouldn't alter the story's flow in the slightest. If there is anything I did hate it was the person who decided to make them as props and not go the necessary mile to give us a reason to invest in them.

Lillie and Nebby are my two favorite characters in the core games, flat-out. Having the legendary Pokemon with us the whole time, seeing Lillie develop from being terrified to even pick her own clothing to standing up to her mother was amazing. Her embracing Nebby and her words in her parting letter in the credits of Moon was the first time a Pokemon game ever made me tear up.

A bizarre Pokémon who dislikes many social activities. She appears to have a penchant for peanut butter and foreign languages.
I've gotta agree with the X/Y friends being a pain. Tierno and Trevor were never plot relevant iirc, and then Calem/Serena was essentially Cheren, but emo and devoid of emotion. I think the only one that can pass as a professional character is Shauna, but I also haven't played through the game in over a year, so I don't remember if she ever just falls flat.
Tbh, X/Y is one of my favorite games, probably because of the simple storyline, unlike Su/Mo. I absolutely despise Su/Mo now. but at some parts, it really is nonsensical.

XY had the twin problem of 1. being sandwiched between BW and SM, which both were known (at least in my mind) for amazing characterization and even depicting Gym Leaders/trial guides as more than just specialized type obstacles to beat down to win a thing, and 2. having practically no decent characterization whatsoever for at least two-thirds of its cast.

And probably more like three-fourths or even four-fifths, because it had a lot of characters to not care about. ORAS each had two admins and a boss for their evil teams, and they all had characterization (although I'm presuming on AS's part because I played OR). XY had like five or six Flare scientists that, with the sole exception of Xerosic in postgame, had zero characterization whatsoever and basically all seemed to blend into each other because (also excepting Xerosic) they were just a bunch of attractive ladies in goggles and matching suits.

And we've already established that the 'rivals' were bland. Basically one-dimensional characters -- only Calem/Serena even shows a single bit of character development, and even then it's just plain vanilla. (Maybe I'm forgetting Shauna's role, but I'm totally forgetting Shauna's role.)

Give me a smaller cast of likeable characters any day over a handful of gravel.

That being said, Gladion is the best jerk rival the series has ever had. Although if Let's Go Johto doesn't pull another Trace and actually does Silver justice in its storyline, he's gonna have some serious competition. Gladion's main advantage over Silver (Blue is largely one-dimensional in his original appearance and actually was a better character in Let's Go than in RGBY) is that Gladion appeared in a generation with cinematic cutscenes and more of a focus on story, so he was able to get more development than just 'I had a conversation with Lance and I am seriously rethinking my life choices.' I still wish Gladion had had a role in freeing Lusamine from Ultra Space rather than just handing the player a Master Ball and boating them to Poni Island, but ultimately SM chose to focus on Lillie and the player, and I can understand why three's a crowd.

Can I hype and complain the same NPC? Because screw Cooltrainer Carolina from Emerald for picking on my Grovyle in our double battle and indirectly resulting in his death, but also thank you for giving me ideas that would eventually make me upgrade you into my story's Wally analog lol.

And while it may look like I'm piling on the hate for the XY rivals, I've been replaying X recently and it's reminding me just how badly they were written, so they totally deserve it. More reason for me to ignore everything except the gameplay and treat the whole thing like a tourist trip lol. And no @Trollkitten, Shauna's no better than the others - she's the token "friend who wants to be closer to you" (her lines at Parfour Palace being the main evidence of this) except you still don't spend much time with her, especially before those lines, so it feels completely undeserved and a bit creepy to boot. I've always maintained that Calem/Serena are the only ones with actual potential to be good characters due to their increasing frustration over losing to you repeatedly, but that's unfortunately downplayed too much.

But on the flip side, replaying HeartGold over the past half-year has re-endeared me to Silver. I know I'll have a lot of fun writing him up in the Johto arc of my story - there's already so much to play with regarding his pursuit of power and it makes him so interesting.

I don't usually fall in love with characters before I play the game (Gladion was the exception), but Allister is my anxiety son and I will love and protect him. I was originally going to get Sword because sword mutt, but now I'm heavily prejudiced towards getting Shield.

I think beyond that, not only was it sandwiched between two gens with better characterization, this was where the anime tried a lot harder with it's characterization, so even the anime based off the same story beats it in most, if not all places. There are still places where it didn't do too hot, like those exceedingly generic 4 admins you can hardly tell apart, but even they are like, half a step better than in game.

Yeah. IMO, Unova was a gen with great games and lousy anime, Kalos was a gen with great anime and lousy games, and Alola was the gen where we finally got both.

I think Sinnoh probably falls under Kalos in terms of games/anime quality ratio, but I can't say for sure because I only played Diamond and not Platinum, and I only watched a handful of the Sinnoh anime episodes (but enjoyed what I did watch).

I love how this has become a Shit on the XY Gang thread. XD I said Hau is the worst rival, but only cause I forgot the XY gang existed. They suck.

In response to the sm talk, I wish Gladion had been the main rival instead of Hau. Imagine how much stronger he couldve been as a character if every time Hau was running his mouth about nothing, Gladion had gotten time to develop? Woulda been amazing.

I personally dislike jerk rivals. They're generally lopsided battles and I just really don't gel with sore loser characters. I'm more for characters like Hau who enjoy their journey and push themselves at their own pace.

That said, jerks give a special kind of satisfaction when it comes to making them eat their words.

I really love Aqua Admin Shelly. She's a bit annoyed when you beat her, but that's overshadowed by how amused she is by it. I mean, that laugh when you curbstomp her? noice

As much as I don't appreciate your Hau slander in my abode! That's pretty much what the anime did. Made Gladion the main rival and gave him more development. A lot of people have said they wished Gladion went to help with Lusamine in Ultra Space with Lillie and protag, which the anime does. I also wished he interacted with Lillie more in the games, which he does in the anime. Basically what I'm saying is the anime does Gladion better than the games U:
