hi
Here's a game I've been playing in discord for a short while. It's pretty simple! Somebody gives you a Pokemon type and a number between 1 and 8, and you make a gym leader who specialises in that type and is fought as the Xth gym leader in their hypothetical region.

For example, the person posting before me gives me Dragon 3, so I create a gym leader who specialises in dragons and uses a team that is appropriate difficulty-wise for being the third gym leader you face.

Tyrunt Lvl 22 - Dragon Tail/Bite/Stealth Rock/Rock Tomb
Gabite Lvl 24 - Tackle/Metal Claw/Sand Attack/Sand Tomb
Exeggutor-Alola Lvl 25 - Dragon Tail/Poisonpowder/Grass Knot/Confusion

Wyette is a tattoo artist who uses various dragon Pokemon as her artistic inspiration. Her gym is situated in a town at the foot of a mountain which she is known to frequently climb in search of dragons to sketch. Her signature TM is Dragon Tail.

You can give your leader as much or as little detail as you like! Their team is the most important part, but beyond that you can write whatever you'd like.

I'll start this off with Ground 2. Have fun!

Ground 2...

Sandshrew Lv. 17 - Defense Curl/Rollout/Mud Slap/Scratch
Baltoy Lv. 19 - Rock Tomb/Confusion/Mud Slap/Rapid Spin
Quagsire Lv. 20 - Water Gun/Yawn/Mud Slap/Protect

TM is Mud Slap. Gen 2 did it!

Anyway the gym "puzzle" is basically just fill it with mud from Sinnoh (i.e. Great Marsh/Route 212) and you have to try and get through while probably falling into mud pitfalls. He's a young kid that likes to play in the mud, get dirty, and tire people out before their gym battle.

Clamperl Lv. 12 - Clamp/Whirlpool/Supersonic/Aqua Ring
Luvdisc Lv. 14 - Draining Kiss/Water Gun/Charm/Aqua Ring

The final battle arena is inside of a large aquarium, and the whole gym doubles as a marine wildlife center, where they release marine wildlife back into the wild! The gym's TM is Aqua Ring, because screw you I can make up TMs for my imaginary gym. Being the first gym, the "puzzle" is basically just battling two trainers, but you do it to help prepare the Pokemon to be released to the wild!

I'm... not entirely certain about Aqua Ring as a TM. Just because I find it mostly useless doesn't mean it's weak enough for gym one, but there really aren't that many good water moves I can put here...

Next person gets Fairy 8!

Clefable Lv 55 @Weakness Policy -Unaware (Magic Coat/Dazzling Gleam/Stored Power/Soft Boiled)

Gym TM: Dazzling Gleam

Hannah isn't the flowery, in-tune-with-their-type sort of Gym Leader many have come to expect. Rather, like many Normal Gym Leaders throughout the series, Hannah is simply a strong Trainer with a strong will to match. Her team comes either prepared to deal with Fairy's weaknesses, knock you out of the park with devastating (if sometimes slow) combinations, or both at once in the case of her ace Clefable. She uses a variety of TMs, Tutor moves, and Egg moves to make this happen-the sort of effort I would expect one to put forth to earn their post as a Gym Leader.

Hannah's Gym facility in itself is, on the inside, designed to resemble a vast, foggy forest, the trees and ground alike covered in fairy rings and huge mushrooms, while the faint whispers of the fey emanate from the distance. Visibility is low in the ever-present mist, and Trainers have to be careful to avoid the tricks and traps scattered throughout that will land them in battles with Gym Trainers or set back their overland progress. Gym Trainers are tough, and are no less prepared to deal with Poison and Steel Types than the Leader herself.

When the player reaches Hannah herself, they find themselves in a circular clearing. The clearing is mist-free, but the trees at the edge are still somewhat enveloped. Hannah stands at the other end, waiting expectantly. However, as soon as the player enters this space, they will look behind them to see the path from which they came is now gone, and the only way out is through.

Speaking with player (challenge): So, you made it, then.
Many people see the Fairy Type as merely something cute, or maybe perhaps as pranksters of a kind.
They underestimate what exactly the type is capable of. Fairies are capable Pokemon in their own right, and I've worked tirelessly to raise the best of the best of them.
Do not think you have already won by simply for preparing for the Fairy type alone. You will need the intellect and strength of a master Trainer in equal measure to pass me and gain access to the Pokemon League.
If, knowing that, you are still ready...then let us begin!

Theme (why was this relegated to such a niche side game? it's a banger)

Defeated the player: Don't be discouraged-work harder, and you will find success.

Defeated by the player (immediate): That's it-the kind of strength a League challenger must possess.

Giving badge: Our battle was absolutely incredible. To use the brunt of my strength and intellect, and yet still be overcome...you are ready. Take the Fey Badge.
With it, any Pokemon can see your competence in command and will obey without question.
Also, have this.
That TM contains Dazzling Gleam. You'd be surprised how many Pokemon can make good use of it, so feel free to try it out!

Already defeated: Your final step is the Pokemon League. Do not stop training and improving. For all the strength and cunning you have shown, no amount of it can save you from complacency.

Rough appearance:

Next person gets Poison 5!

Arsenio's personality is as toxic as the Pokemon he surrounds himself with- no honor-bound ninja or righteous rocker like Poison-type leaders of ages past, he's slimier than a Gulpin and proud of it, too. His style of battle revolves around preventing a fast battle- no Psychic- or Ground-type can sweep through his entire team, built to wear his opponents down slowly both in terms of health and power. Rare for him, his gym was actually won honestly- he's no pushover in battle.

His gym is at the back of the Game Corner- this time a seedy, velvet- and roulette-filled corridor filled with trainers who've studied under Arsenio- at least, those who haven't quit in disgust yet. At the end of the gym lies a giant slot machine- where there's a 50% chance of victory- the prize being a set of three Antidotes (a crummy gift, if you ask me), but be warned- losing will cause a random Pokemon of yours to become poisoned, and force you to try again!

The room in which he lies (literally) is covered in velvet benches and even less-lit than before. He's in the center, laying sideways, attempting to be seductive but really not coming off as anything more than disgusting.
Arsenio himself wears a velvet suit and golden jewelry- pale-faced with slicked-back indigo hair and a constant smirk on his face. Once you beat him, however, the smirk vanishes and he's left shocked. He reluctantly gives you the Miasma Badge and the TM for Venom Drench. Yes, you can punch him. No, I didn't want to write his dialogue.

Next person gets Electric 6!

Lexi is not only a gym leader, but also the creator and maintainer of the region's PC service. He absolutely adores the razzle-dazzle of the stage, which can be seen in a gym filled with scenery, props and effects that wouldn't be out of place in a high-budgeted glam concert.

Amethyst is an anthropologist, studying how modern-day Pokemon society came to be. She trained under Professor Oak in Kanto and for a time, worked with him, but she, upon concluding that Pokemon battling was a huge influence in creating society, decided that the best way to research was through immersion. Thus, she decided to become a battler, and she has been recognized for her skill with rock type Pokemon.

Desmond is very simply...focused. A black belt in seven different types of martial arts, he wears each of them with pride in a single braided belt. Always calm and collected, he likes to act as a mentor, spending little time actually in his gym, and acting as a guide and teacher for young trainers throughout their journey. The gym itself is an obstacle course, requiring you to use HMs you've collected around the region to traverse. If you reach him fast enough, he'll actually battle you, otherwise you will be sent back to the start of the gym. When defeating him, he hands out the Bruise Badge, and the TM for Reversal.

Orchid is a famous naturalist and explorer who have went on several expeditions to map the most dangerous landscapes in the pokemon world in search of new and rare pokemon and in order to study these habitats. She specializes in studying the great Jungles and how pokemon co-exist with plant life in them. She is about 40 years old, has light brown skin and green bright eyes, and a very long brown braid with a little grass knot at it's end. She wears something that looks like a combination of West-South American indigenous clothing and old 19th century explorers gear. Her gym look like a dense Jungle in which you can easily get lost. You must use the version of Cut this game provides to get around, however the plants soon grow back where you cut them so every move to the next tile counts (a little bit like the crushing ice flower gym riddle). The trainers you'll fight in her gym are explorers, scientists and nature-lovers.

Desmond is an old biker who's gym is located in his motorcycle workshop. There's no real puzzle there since it's the first gym. The player character is probably too young to ride a motorbike but he likes the cut of your jib so when you beat him he lets you have the pedal bike he used to ride as a kid.

He gives out the TM for Embargo, and his badge is the Oil Badge.

Vic is a street-smart Punk Guy who knows how rough things can get for traveling Trainers who fall on hard times, and he's taken it upon himself to at least make newer Trainers aware that a Pokemon journey isn't all sunshine and rainbows - not to actually subject them to such hard times, of course, but to teach them that you need to think your way through situations to have lasting success, rather than just auto-piloting through everything. He models his gym after city alleyways: a couple Trainers guard the central path straight to Vic, but alleyways to the sides will reward those who'd rather not risk getting their team too dinged up fighting opponents they're not familiar with before they reach the Gym Leader. Oh, and his badge is the Wily Badge, in keeping with Vic's worldview.

Alolan Meowth: Lvl. 13 - no item - Rattled - Bite/Growl/Fury Swipes/Torment
Murkrow: Lvl. 15 - Oran Berry - Super Luck - Pursuit/Peck/Night Shade/Torment

The theme for this fight, as well as the TM rewarded for winning, is Torment. A newer Trainer who's still learning the basics of battling is likely to just straight-up attack stuff with the strongest move a given Pokemon has and not understand how to use their other kinds of moves, including other "weaker" attacks that might not have a type advantage and/or STAB. Torment encourages Trainers to start learning what else their Pokemon can do. Can they inflict a status condition like poison or paralysis? Do they have a priority move to hit Vic's Pokemon first (more prominent with how fast his team is)? Can they lower their opponent's stats or raise their own, and which ones would you want to change to benefit your team? And if you are able to utilize a type advantage, like using an Electric type against Murkrow instead of your chosen starter, that's also successfully using your noggin to give yourself a leg up that rewards you by naturally ending the fight faster.

The chosen abilities are meant to present sudden changes to the battle scenario that the player might not see coming, and they have to be ready to adjust what they're doing on the fly to get around them. Rattled really only comes into play if you're trying to use a Bug move for a type advantage, but raising Alolan Meowth's Speed could still make a difference against that early game Bug type you've been grinding up. Admittedly this was also a bit of an "efficiency" decision on my part - Pickup does absolutely nothing here, and I feel Technician plus Alolan Meowth's chosen attacks would be a bit much even with its low offenses. As for Murkrow, I didn't want to cut off the option of putting it to sleep as part of what else a Trainer might try learning about and experimenting with, so Insomnia was out. Prankster is also pretty niche and the implications of it might fly over newer players' heads, especially with not many other Pokemon around at all, let alone in the early game, to reinforce the idea of status moves being given priority. Super Luck was the best choice imo, but by limiting Murkrow's attacks to low-power or fixed-damage moves, this will prevent crits from wrecking your team as long as you avoid type disadvantages. Other status moves that Murkrow learns also seemed like a bit much when combined with Pursuit, which already punishes you for switching, since said status moves would further encourage switching to erase debuffs - learn to use what you have with the Pokemon on the field, or if you have to switch, do it early on when it's still setting up Torment (or between mons if playing on Shift style).

Hmmm... how about Fire 5 next?

EDIT: Holy crap how'd I get ninja'd so hard lol. I don't want to change my post though.

Howdy! I'm Toyo the Toyo. So this is what the inside of a Pokedex is like...
Eh, I'll just do both of them.

Doduo - Lv 18 w/ Tangled Feet - Pursuit, Quick Attack, Roost, Aerial Ace
Ducklett - Lv 18 w/ Big Pecks - Water Pulse, Aerial Ace, Hidden Power (Ground), Defog
Gligar - Lv 20 w/ Hyper Cutter - Knock Off, Fury Cutter, Aerial Ace, Metal Claw

Corvus is a bit of an old-fashioned man who's mostly settled down from his more serious job of a pilot, now preferring to simply partake in gym battles instead. His gym's based around something that's like moving on a plane from place to place, with protective areas and also a fixed path.

He gives out the Wing Badge to those who best him in battle, as well as the TM for Aerial Ace.
Magmar - Lv 33 w/ Flame Body - Clear Smog, Confuse Ray, Flamethrower, Low Kick
Turtonator - Lv 33 w/ Shell Armor - Body Slam, Flamethrower, Dragon Pulse, Iron Defense
Talonflame - Lv 35 w/ Gale Wings - Roost, Flamethrower, Quick Attack, U-Turn
Camerupt - Lv 36 w/ Solid Rock - Amnesia, Earth Power, Rock Slide, Flamethrower

Calvin's a researcher who's seeking more information about solar energy, and is using it as his gym puzzle to a degree. Namely, it involves light and mirrors to get the light to panels to open a door. It's also educational!

Upon his defeat, he gives trainers the Solar Badge and the TM for Flamethrower.

Whew, that was tiring! I wanna see something basic after that. Someone give me Normal 8.

Wigglytuff Lv 48 W/ Cute Charm - Return, Dazzling Gleam, Flamethrower, Shadow Ball
Snorlax Lv 50 W/ Thick Fat @Lum Berry - Rest, Return, Sleep Talk, Heavy Slam

Cassie is a Pokemon breeder alongside her gym leader duties, since very few people manage to get far enough in their gym challenge to face her. She hands out the Friendship Badge and the TM Return. She values treating your Pokemon kindly above all other things, and she’ll battle you to prove it! Her gym puzzle revolves around helping escort a gaggle of baby Igglybuff through her maze-like gym and helping them avoid “ambushes” throughout the gym. If one of the three Igglybuff are caught, it’s back to the beginning, so putting thought into where you lead your Pokemon is key!

How about, for the next gym, we go with Bug 7?

The Sun Hating Pokemon. Many AnOddEncounters have become addicted to nuzlocking and see playing pokemon normally as a sin to their culture.
Ooh, Bug 7
Gym Puzzle: Gameplay would turn into more of a 2D Platformer, more akin to a mario level. The main gimmick being the player would have to traverse up a tower by bouncing on top of spider webs and avoiding getting hit by hardened cocoons falling from god knows where. There would be certain straightaways that would be played in a normal pokemon fashion where trainers would be placed, as well as web climbing sections in which you'd climb up or around the tower while of course avoiding cocoons.

Info on the Leader: Anthony was a young member of Team Skull who absolutely idolized Guzma even getting a Golisiopod of his own and dedicating his time to learning as much as he can about bug types. While he's left his past behind him, he still keeps his trusty Golisiopod.

Team:
Forretress W/Sturdy Lv. 40, Moves: Explosion, Spikes, Rock Slide, Toxic

Yanmega W/Speed Boost Lv. 42 Moves: Bug Buzz, Air Slash, Leech Life, Ancient Power

Accelgor: W/Hydration Lv. 41 Moves: Water Shuriken, U-Turn, Bug Buzz, Leech Life

Galvantula: W/Compound Eyes Lv. 43 Moves: Thunder, Leech Life, Sticky Web, Agility

Golisiopod: W/Emergency Exit Lv. 43 Moves: First Impression, Leech Life, Liquidation, Sucker Punch

After beating Anthony he gives you the Honey Badge as well as the TM for Leech life

Ice 3? I know it sounds stupid.

Spheal Lvl 23 - Ice Body - Frost Breath/Brine/Rollout/Encore
Alolan Ninetails Lvl 24 - Snow Cloak Frost Breath/Hail/Dazzling Gleam/Confuse Ray

Damien is the toughest as nails guy you will probably meet. While his gym itself is located on top of a snowy peak, Damien walks around in a t-shirt and shorts, completely unphased by his surroundings. In charge of the ski lift to the top of the mountain, his gym doubles as the station at the top of the mountain. To one side is the normal way people go to ski down the mountain, but the other side is a series of snowy slopes and hand cranked lifts, where trainers must navigate their way through to get to Damien. Beating him earns you the Slope Badge, and the TM for Frost Breath.

Because I'm surprised no one's done it yet, Psychic 4.

Mateo has a moving gym made entirely of hot air balloons. Together with his gym trainers, he travels his region mapping season weather pattens. The gym puzzle involves climbing aboard the fleet of balloons, battling the trainers that occupy them, and then directing the balloon up or down, side to side, until you reach Mateo's balloon. It's decked to the nines in research equipment, so it really stands out.
Bonus twist! All battles are sky battles. If you want to beat the birds, you need to train a bird.

Team:
STARAVIA: (lv.28) ability: Intimidate. moves: Aerial Ace, Quick Attack, Whirlwind
DRIFBLIM (lv. 28) ability: Aftermath. moves: Gust, Minimize, Stockpile, Shadow Ball
