RIP the dream

So, yeah, Game Informer got/presented some info wrong. We're not going to battle all 18 gyms in one game (I at least hoped it would be post-game stuff), but at the same time we could see more than 8 gyms that we battle. I'd hope they would be a 9 gym split between the two, but I imagine they would have said if Nessa and Milo were exclusive to one or the other by now. I imagine we'll still SEE the exclusive leaders in some capacity, though.

Still holding out hope that we have a battleable Dark gym though. It is WAY overdue.

I think a sizeable chunk of Pokemon fans reacted like this.

EDIT: Aaaand TPCI confirmed that there are, in fact, 8 gyms. It's in the lore only that there are 18 gyms.

I am excited for Galarian Ponyta, but Impidimp is my Fairy of choice, ironically.

I feel bad for the people that watched the entire thing. Impidimp was shown, which we already knew about, and a Galarian form of, you guessed it, yet another Kanto Pokemon!

I get why it's Kanto, but besides Obstagoon, it's always Kanto only. Where's the love for Johto or any other region? Kanto shit overshadows the new shit at this point. It's tiring.

Who cares if it happens to be a Kanto Pokemon? At least it wasn't an overly exposed Pokemon like Gyarados or Charmander. Outside of Platinum nuzlockes, I have rarely heard of anybody using the Ponyta line.

anyway that was a huge waste of time and didn't really hype me up at all, the trailers are more exciting than this

Because it's always a Kanto Pokemon. There's fairly unloved Kanto mons, yes, but there's loads of unloved Johto and Hoenn mons as well.

While I would much rather have had Galarian forms of Pokemon from other generations (I hope most of them are), I love the design of Galarian Ponyta. The last little interaction with the two sold me on it because it was absolutely adorable. I will probably use it for my first playthrough regardless of whether or not I have either of its types.

Although, I do have one issue with Galarian Ponyta. I may have come up with a regional variant of Ponyta for a planned storylocke back in September.

I just feel sorry for the people who animated and tested this stream. Imagine having to watch massive chunks, or the entire thing, multiple times because something keeps breaking and you gotta rewatch the whole thing again just to make sure the video plays back properly all the way through.

New teaser for Galarian Ponyta is out.

It's Psychic and is actually classified differently than regular Ponyta accordingly. It's the Unique Horn Pokemon. It's abilities a Run Away (Blech) and a new one called Pastel Veil, which prevents AND heals poison for both Ponyta and its allies.

It's a Shield exclusive though. At least I now know something that's going to be on my first Shield team alongside Grookey?

EDIT: Slight note: They have yet to reveal Impidimp. I think it'd be hilarious if it's the one Pokemon that TPCi never actually acknowledges. The site just skips its number when it comes up. It never appears in the anime/TCG. Pokemon Home doesn't have a dex entry for it.

A Psychic type, eh? And it's exclusive to Shield, the version I reserved? Great! This cute pony will make a fine addition to the Violet Wizard's team!

Adept at procrastination. If he ever seems productive, it's likely because he's ignoring something far more important.
I guess it's the counterpart for Farfetch'd in Swish? It's pretty cute. I might give it a go on my team, so long as nothing else on the squad already fills its role.

Also, people being impatient about the 24 hour stream amuse me. They clearly weren't a part of the fandom back in the days of getting a silhouette in one month's Corocoro and then not seeing the Pokemon revealed until the following month's issue! I definitely wouldn't have tuned in for the whole thing, as it was pretty clear that the VAST majority of the stream would be ambient nothingness, but I was glad to see them do something different and return to the more teaser-y reveals of old.

Also, I'm not bothered about Kanto Pokemon getting any "favouritism" in forms or anything. I care moreso about whether I like the Pokemon and their alternate design. And in that respect, Galarian Weezing and Galarian Ponyta appeal to me way more than Galarian Zigzagoon, Galarian Linoone and Obstagoon do.

Used to be frequent, but has matured into a lazy son of a--
...my hopes for these games are dying.

On the one hand, Farfetch'd gets an evolution (which throws another wrench at Pokémon go) and Ponyta gets a new form (/potential for new regional Evo).

However, on the other hand, more gen 1 pandering with the gimmick of the season involving thickachu, longcat, jumbo eevee, and yet another charizard. It's a clever ploy to not show off all of the new galarian pokemon but with the game coming out next month and all we got at this point were 15 new Pokémon, 3 scrapped evolutions for gigantamax, and shadow Zigzagoon being the only non-Kanto galarian form, this region is looking a lot smaller in my eyes, possibly barely touching 900 by the game's release. I'll still consider shield for now, but GF needs to stop with the gen 1 pandering.

As I've said, Blame (BW)² for this.

I like the new forms, but... no... just stop!

Every time they reveal something new, it further kills my hopes for these games. It's been 20 years, can't they just move on from Gen 1 already? It really doesn't make sense for them to add Gigantamax forms for unevolved Pokemon, either.

I can definitely get behind a "shut up about Kanto" hashtag.

So, I have to note something about this: Game Freak has learned from Sun and Moon. They revealed a majority of the new Pokemon/Alolan Forms before release meaning that there were very few left to discover. For Sword and Shield, we're getting a more reserved release and that means we have plenty to discover after release.

While I agree that we need more non-Gen 1 regional variants and Gigantamax forms, there actually is an interesting thing to note about the five revealed today:
Pikachu and Eevee are a bonus for those who got Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee and are an old save bonus
Charizard, Butterfree, and Meowth are all prominent Pokemon in the anime

Not to mention, there actually IS a good reason for them to focus on Kanto in by Gen 7 and 8:

Pokemon Sun and Moon came on the heels of Pokemon Go, which at the time was only Kanto Pokemon and was wildly popular, bringing in new fans. That's why we got Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee, after all.

Pokemon Sword and Shield, as a result, are coming after Let's Go and therefore have marketing for Kanto Pokemon to entice those new players to come get these ones.

Should they have revealed more non-Gen 1 stuff already? Absolutely. Do they have a reason to focus more on Kanto stuff? Yes. How good it is is obviously subjective (I myself don't necessarily agree with it but I can definitely see it).

Now for my actual opinion on the reveals today, I agree they were kind of underwhelming. I like the designs of Charizard and Butterfree though. People have pointed out that Pikachu and Eevee draw heavy inspiration from their Gen 1 sprites.

Also, Gigantamax Meowth is over 100 feet tall. I can't wait until Team Rocket experiences this in the anime.

Dynamax Alolan Exeggutor versus Gigantimax Meowth! PLACE YOUR BETS NOW!

Charizard comes no surprise since that seems to be the Champion's ace. Design is neat but, yeah, enough 'Zard please?

Kinda eh-ish on Eevee and Pikachu. I understand why to tie in Let's Go games. And to get the hardcore collectors to buy that title maybe. Though, I guess, since Eevee is usually male, that all the ladies now really love giant Eevees?

Butterfree... shrug? I guess this brings "parity" with Beedrill's mega-form, which may or may not even be in the game. It wins in design over Bee though, that's for sure.

I kinda like they're not showing off everything before release. Although I would like one or two more Galar mons to be seen, even if its just starter MEVOs.

Sadly, this is a trend that seems to be staying with the modern games. The Gen 1 roster getting lots of love because, well, they were the first. Pokémon like Pikachu, Charizard, and Eevee are almost always what people think of whenever they hear about the series. I grew up with Red version, and I love many of the Pokémon from that generation, so it doesn't bother me too much. I understand why people are upset, but it's not a deal breaker for most of us.

With that out of the way... OH MY GODS I'M SO HAPPY BUTTERFREE IS GETTING MORE LOVE THIS GEN!!! That effect on its signature Max Move looks so broken, and Smogon is probably already thinking of banning it, but I just love how majestic this beautiful butterfly is! Definitely makes up for it not getting a Mega in Gen 6!

I'd copy-paste the Zorua Pokedex entry, but I'm too lazy.
While I'm not excited for how the game is turning out as a whole, I really like all of the smaller QoL changes. Move Deleter and Name Rater at every Poke Center, the new "Wonder Trade in the background as you play" thing, being able to play Rating Battles without having to do a bunch of Pokemon Global Lnk stuff, the skippable catching tutorial (apparently if you've already caught a Pokemon by the name it should trigger it just won't trigger at all!), Mystery Gift being in the game menu instead of the start screen... good stuff.

The latest trailer was a dud for sure. Butterfree getting a Gigantamax form is cool, but the design isn't particularly inspired. Gigantamax Charizard was expected when Leon had one tagging along, but I'll admit it looks pretty awesome, at least. And the others are all unevolved Pokemon, meaning their usefulness will be limited ingame and completely nonexistent otherwise.

That said, a lot of the new details from the previews sound great! So I'm still definitely excited for the games, but the marketing plan certainly could have used some tweaks. I'm glad they decided to go lighter on the Pokemon reveals this time, though. Looking forward to discovering a bunch of new stuff early in the game rather than needing to wait a LONG time before seeing some unannounced Pokemon like we had to in the past two gens.
